Spotify as one of the most important Andoid Apps stopped working (not reliable; see details below) on my Xperia X. The buggy new version from the Aptoide Store is 8.4.83.621 (edit: 8.4.84.863 same behavior). The version before 8.4.83.614 worked fine.

Before I started debugging it never worked. Just a black window appeared without loading any content (tried surely just a few times). In the testing process it worked the first time. Some minutes ago it then was successful even eight times in a row followed by a fail again some minutes later.

Attached 2 logs I created with

devel-su /opt/alien /system/bin/logcat

Test details:

  • The Android service has been restarted before every test
  • The command has been called right before opening the spotify app out of the menu
  • The error log ends right after I hit the quit button of the wait/close layer.

Update 2018-12-08:

I most likely found the main cause/difference most of the tries are working or failing for me. If i am logged into wifi it failed and on mobile connection it (always) worked.
Tested on the newest version 8.4.84.863 in the Aptoide Store.
But on the other hand for the debug logs above I should had been logged into wifi as well.
Anyway I now reproduced it 2 times working with mobile internet vs 2 times failing in wifi.
Can someone try to test this as well ?

  • Added payback version information at the bottom

Additionally here the error log of the payback app version 18.11.10190 (the biggest German cashback platform) which does not load anything at all. It would be an important app for me, but I understand that it has not such a high priority.

I have gotten the black screen behavior a few times, too, but most of the time Spotify works for me. Using Yapl Store, which claims at the moment that there are no updates for Spotify, I'm running version 8.4.82.664.

How did you get that newer Spotify version?

I also have problems with the newest version from Yalp store. My son accidently deleted the older version and after installing the newest nothing but a grey screen and the android arrow. @Direc It's really strange. 8.4.82.664 does not work on my Xperia X

dirksche ( 2018-12-05 19:04:57 +0300 )edit

Nope, I now have the same issue. I removed and reinstalled the above version, and I can't get it to work.

Using mobile broadband, if I use IPv4 or both, I get stuck to black screen. If I use IPv6, I get to login screen, but it says that there is no Internet access.

Direc ( 2018-12-05 20:36:42 +0300 )edit

Use Yalp to install APK's direct from Playstore, works well.

And use Hutspot for a native Spotify app, and don't forget to ask Spotify where a native app from their side stays. Vote here.

The version from Yalp store didn't work on my Xperia. Hutspot? Which source?

With preferences»apps I deleted cache and data, deinstalled spotify, made a reboot and installed the newest Version 8.4.83.625. And everything works fine.

Edit: 9.12.18 Nothing works fine. Sometimes the app opens, and sometimes I see just a grey screen with android arrow. I could not find a pattern. Disabeling wifi doesn't help

Edit: 10.12.18 Installed an older version again. See my second answer.

This is not the experience I did so far. I installed the minor updated version .625 and today also the new 8.4.84.863. Both with deleted data. Both sometimes are working but both also showed the faulty behavior. To me it looks like some network handling issues of alien-dalvik. I did not find reason for it to work or fail.

CLR64 ( 2018-12-08 20:19:21 +0300 )edit

Same problem as above, same solution as in this answer (Version .625). Except deleting cache and data with new login was enough.

wosrediinanatour ( 2018-12-08 23:59:13 +0300 )edit

I retested with .625 once again. It was the same as written in the update of the question.

  1. The initial start of the app worked. I could login with my account but immediately after the press of the login button the app froze.
  2. I restarted android and tried again. The known grey outer frame of Spotify appeared and nothing more happened. I was logged into the interned via wifi.
  3. I disabled wifi and tried again. Worked this time.

I still don't have a working Spotify, and I can't find a pattern either.

My solution: I installed Version 8.4.80.793 from Aptoide Store. I know that it is just a workaround but who cares?

Edit: Or, if you don't like aptoide, go to Yalp and enter Version number: 38801093 in manual download. That was my last good working version

Unfortunately this is normal behaviour for Spotify on SFOS - the APP is mostly usable but every few update nothing but blank screen etc

This behavior has been prevalent at least 2 years

I do so miss Cutespot... :(

Looks like it does. I just removed Spotify Music (via Yapl Store) and installed the said version from Aptoide.

It even survived functional after rebooting my phone. Looking good so far...

Direc ( 2018-12-18 17:21:18 +0300 )edit

Nope, mine stopped working again.

Forget aptoide, and download .apk somewhere. It could work, because earlier (here TogetherJolla) there was same kind of issue with another android application and somehow aptoide version was problem. And problem was solved by installing newer version of application from the service provider. If I remember correctly it was whatsapp messenger application.

I do not trust aptoide anymore for that reason.

I say it again. I got the non working version from Yalp Store. The old version from Aptoide did work.

I have the faulty behaviour with version 8.4.83.625 (39849639). I uninstalled it and downloaded version 8,4,82.664 (39587729) via Yalp Store (the three dots in the lower right corner on the app page in Yalp Store allow you to select which version to download) and got it back working.

Thank you for confirming problems with the recent spotify versions. But this is no answer. Just a comment. I know I can revert the version. It is just a workaround and another recent "answer" already mentioned too.

Yes, you are right, but this is the best we can do so far to get Spotify working.

Giacomo Di Giacomo ( 2018-12-09 12:10:13 +0300 )edit

@CLR64 Why is using an 1 month old version no solution? 1 week ago this version was okay for you, now it isn't? Do you miss anything in this "old" version? There are apps in the store that aren't updatet for month or years.

not at all, neithet wifi no lte

ray-ven ( 2018-12-17 11:59:20 +0300 )edit

Really weird, it works 100% of times for me. I uninstalled 8.4.83 and reinstalled 8.4.82, then installed 8.4.84 on top of that when it came out and got it working.

Giacomo Di Giacomo ( 2018-12-18 10:27:54 +0300 )edit

As mentioned before it looks like a bad network handling to me. If I am in my home network via Wifi it works almost never. If I log in via 3G / 4G I also have nearly no problems. Others seems to have different results. It's really annoying for a lot of us at least.
