In case of emergency (ICE) is a program that enables first responders, such as paramedics, firefighters, and police officers, as well as hospital personnel, to contact the next of kin of the owner of a mobile phone to obtain important medical or support information (the phone must be unlocked and working). The phone entry (or entries) should supplement or complement written (such as wallet, bracelet, or necklace) information or indicators. The programme was conceived in the mid-2000s and promoted by British paramedic Bob Brotchie in May 2005. It encourages people to enter emergency contacts in their mobile phone address book under the name "ICE". Alternatively, a person can list multiple emergency contacts as "ICE1", "ICE2", etc. The popularity of the program has spread across Europe and Australia, and it has started to grow into North America.

Questions

How should the ICE contacts be marked and prioritized in the people app?
How should this information be made available to first responders (firefighters, paramedics, etc.)?

I liked the way I could do it on the N9 using the 'Billboard standby screen' app, where I had added my wife's phone-number to the standy/lock-screen. Perhaps something like this could also be done on the Jolla.

The ICE number and details can be displayed on the lock screen from where they can be copied with no need to compromise the security by having to unlock the phone.

@richardski - I wouldn't be comfortable with having the phone numbers of my nearest and dearest visible with a simple double-tap.

@vattuvarg, imagine YOU are a firefighter/parameding pulling someone from a mangled car wreck. You search the unconscious victim and find an unfamiliar phone you have no idea how to operate. There are other victims to pull out of other cars, every second counts. Would YOU go beyond a simple button press to reveal the info on the first screen you see? I would like to see an emergency worker that does even that...

As far as I know the other people will be pulled out of their cars first before the first responder even starts looking for a phone.

Would most people go beyond a simple button press? Yes, most people are happy to share everything (inluding very personal information and geo-position) with american companies (and their customers).

Would I protect my family beyond a simple button press? Yes, I would.

Two solutions appear to be possible:

Make a separate people app entry for ICE numbers that is fairly visible.
Just make a ICE entry in your address book

Option 1 requires work and I'm not sure whether this should be a priority given that option 2 is a natural solution. Searching for ICE will also provide the right number easily if it is a normal entry. I'd say option 2 is adequate.

There are ICE entries in my address book now. But one question remains: If my phone is locked, how do the first responders get to them?

today smartphone locking options disabled ICE number, but if phone makers do ICE number to use in lockmode it's can actually help someone.

This type of emergency settings could be handled by an app. Linking the locking function to the trusted people seems to be similar to what I have proposed about a Senior Phone app. https://together.jolla.com/question/19528/could-some-ideas-be-done-without-other-halves/

I suggest a free form message area on the lock screen. No fancy links to the address book or other potentially security compromising things. The free form text could display how to contact the owner (in case the phone was lost), and/or an ICE contact. It's up to everyone if and how to use this field. Implementation should be quite easy.

If your environment is so evil, you should not use this feature. Any paper based ICE contacts can be compromised as well. Normally the lock screen is only very briefly visible. Font size could be small to prevent getting the details with a quick glance. I object any feature which bypasses the lock code. There could be a protected area, just showing ICE or owner information on a tap on an ICE/INFO button on the lock screen, but no access to the phone book, please!

I totally agree with the no-access-to-phonebook. As for my environment... Well, it used to be nice but it isn't anymore. The Jolla is the first phone in which I have been forced to install a lock. My daughter has my old Nokia 700 that was always open but now has a freshly installed lock app. Good people have gone bad and it is happening all over. I hate it but it is the reality now. Things like face-raping and crank calling used to be taboo, now it's everyones' hobby. :(

It would be nice to have an option on the lock screen to call directly to the defined ICE numbers. It shouldn't show the actual numbers, for privacy reasons, but just a contact name with a text ICE appended. On the lock screen there should be a button, where you could open the emergency dialer.

Defining which numbers are ICE-numbers, could be just a feature in the contacts app.
