Documentation for Keyboard Mapping?

I am attempting to get my Planet Gemini keyboard correctly mapped between the symbol on physical key and the character that appears on the screen.
I've tracked down the gemini file in the planet_vndr directory. This appears to have mappings for the keyboard which should make the correct characters appear, but it is apparently being ignored by Sailfish X. Does this mapping file need activating somehow?
Is there any documentation for this process?
