Xperia X F5121 display brightness too high on lowest setting, XA2 also?

I have destroyed my X F5121 and bought XA2 to replace it. Now that I still have Android on the new XA2, I can safely say that it's display brightness goes way darker with dimming slider than X F5121 with SFOS ever did.

It was never comfortable to read the display in dark room with X+SFOS, quite eye irritating even with lowest setting. Now with XA2+Android it is easy and comfortable to read even in total darkness with lowest setting.

I can't compare head to head... does anybody have both phones still operational? I would want to know is it ok to read XA2+SFOS in darkened room?

  • The brightness is dimmer if you tick the automatic adjustment off from Display settings (Asetukset -> Näyttö -> Säädä automaattisesti). Then, set the brightness to the lowest value.
  • To make the screen even dimmer, you shall use Tint Overlay from OpenRepos.

With these two, I have managed to get a comfortable brightness for reading in the dark room.

I have never had Android on my XA2 as I bought it second hand with SFOS installed already, so I can't compare with Android on XA2. I hope my post was still helpful.

As comparison: With similar settings on Intex Aqua Fish (Non-automatic brightness, brightness set to the lowest value) the XA2 is much dimmer. For my eye the brightness of XA2 seems to be 1/3 of the Intex AF.

Unfortunately, Tint Overlay causes a lot of screen flickering every time you swipe, which I find even worse than a screen that's too bright.

I have never experienced any flickering with Tint Overlay. Maybe my eyes are not sensitive for it, if it happens on my devices also.

I use it on the Jolla Tablet, so perhaps it's only a problem with large screens.

I'll check Tint Overlay out, thanks @MRI-xa2

Edit: Holy smoke it does just what I needed! I suggest you give it a try!

I have both Xperia X and XA2 Plus devices. The XA2 screen is much more comfortable in a dark room. For Xperia X changed settings /etc/mce/20als-defaults.ini. For XA2 nothing to do need not, to read comfortably.

I wish my XA2 was even darker at minimum settings (I have effective blinds) but the ini file looks...minimum already.

You must edit the file /etc/mce/20als-defaults.ini section

[BrightnessDisplay]

LevelsProfile0=

The file itself is attached to the answer.

The lowest setting is already 1, so I don't think it's possible to make it any dimmer. Do you have any guide how the file works?

No manual. Brightness base on data from Ambient Light Sensor.

LimitsProfile - Limits are Ambient light sensor values [lux].

LevelsProfile - Levels are brightness percentages.

The profile number corresponds to the position of the brightness slider.

Profile0 corresponds to the leftmost position of the brightness slider.

Profile20 corresponds to the rightmost position of the brightness slider.

The smallest values are 1 and 1, so it's as dark as it gets.
