Domestic roaming

I have had a lot of problems with my Sailfish powered devices since some of the Danish mobile network providers has started sharing 4G in areas where one provider may not have 4G coverage.

The network setup is like this: I’m a customer at a provider using 3’s mobile network. 3 and the largest network provider in Denmark TDC has entered into an agreement of sharing their 4G network in areas where the other currently is not providing good 4G coverage. They are using what I would call ”domestic roaming” it works so that if I’m in an area where 3 only provide 3G I should through roaming be transferred to TDC’s 4G network. Unfortunately Sailfish can’t handle this setup. The problem varies a bit depending on the phone:

Xperia XA2 (3.0.2.8): cannot connect to the network at all, the status is all the time flipping between ”connecting and enabled”, as soon as I move out of the roaming zone, to an area where 3 is providing 4G it connects OK. Even setting “preferred 3G” or “disallowed roaming”, does not help.

Xperia X (3.0.2.8): can connect to 3’s network and work with very slow speed on 3G in roaming area – it cannot connect to the roaming provided 4G network. It connects to 4G and work fine on 3’s own mobile network when I’ not in a roaming area.

Aqua fish (3.0.0.8): Like my XA2 cannot connect at all.

Jolla 1 (3.0.2.8): Like my X, can work in 3G in roaming area.

I don’t know if it is a coincidence but both phones not working at all are dual-sim phones.

Unfortunately I live in exactly in an area where domestic roaming was established about three months ago – so the last three months with Sailfish phones has been nothing but a nightmare.

I have tried everything, every network setup variation, reinstalling Android (which by the way worked flawlessly with the roaming setup) re-flashing Sailfish several times. I have communicated with Jolla Zendesk and was hoping 3.0.2.8 would be better, but its even worse than before.

I really really hate to say this but (like others recently) I’m just about to give up on Jolla, after more than four years of using Sailfish. I have not had a well functioning phone for 2.5 year, not since the Aqua Fish came out. After Jolla started developing Sailfish X quality and usability has just gone down and down. Apart from recent network struggles let me just mention 1,5 years of not being able to use my phone hands-free in my car due to the Bluetooth issue, all the things never implemented for the X, and now 1st of April I can no longer use MobilePay (most used mobile payment solution in DK) because it now will require Android > 5 and MobilePay does not work at all on mobile network in the new Android solution on the XA2.

Sorry for the looong and whining story but please suggest what is there to do when no improvements are in sight. In the way I use my phone things seem to be getting worse release after release...

I think this problem is the same as the known roaming problem. Search here at TJC and you will find different posts

I’m aware of the roaming problems when crossing country borders but I have never heard of anyone having a problem like mine domestically, where the phone does not work properly even within ones own country...

I don't think the roaming problem is because of a different contry, but because of different providers/network types. So maybe it is the same problem. But of course I don't know the root cause of this issue and it is only my suggestion... I never heard about 4G sharing here in Germany. So maybe nobody reports it, because there is no such sharing in other countries...

Domestic roaming occurs when your mobile device connects to a non-Verizon Wireless network in the United States tellsubway, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands.

I don’t think this question is a duplicate of 177397 as that describes a roaming problem crossing country borders not a roaming problem in ones home country, that has arised as a new local roaming deal between domestic providers has been established. My situation could easily also start arising in other countries.

It is a general roaming problem... No matter where you have it. I'm not an expert but i think the modem does the same...
