Battery drain caused by ofonod. "# top" shows:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
25224 radio 20 0 20220 3784 2996 R 99.6 0.1 322:31.67 ofonod

Any ideas to prevent this?

Did you try to restart ofono? devel-su systemctl restart ofono Just a shot in the dark

Sure, I can restart the service but this handles only the symptoms. The focus of the question is more on the cause of this critical behavior.

Is the problem reproducible?

@slava: I noticed this accidentally (it was connected to USB but the battery didn't got charged). Since then every time when the phone is warmer/hotter then normal, I check the CPU usage. This high cpu load was identified a couple of times now. It is not clear what the trigger is. The phone usage from my side is quite normal; phone calls, SMS and Mail usage, no WIFI, no Android middleware installed.

Please install Ofono Logger app from Jolla store (or openrepos) and capture the log next time it happens. That may help to understand what ofono is doing.

Lighthouse from openrepos shows the cpu usage of every active app or process

It appears by itself. It doesn't matter if you use the cellular features or not. I think it's enough to just have the phone turned on as usual. It could have something to do with a bad SIM, but I have changed mine a few times - back when I used Xperia X - with no help.
