As it is, some links in some pages will automatically open a new tab in the browser. Not a problem, and not uncommon behavior for a browser, but there is no back button for the new page, (being the first page loaded on the new tab), so to return to the previous tab, it's a two step maneuver. Back button should be available to automatically close the current tab, and return to the previous one.

Bad idea, IMO. Does any browser do that? This is something that should be standard across browsers.
To save one tap - to close the tab?
And if you tap 'back' in error, should 'forward' reopen the tab? If not, why not - for consistency?
@Spark That's interesting - especially as Brendon Eich comes from Netscape/Mozilla. I don't think Chromium does - I must check.
If you keep going 'back' does it eventually end up at the origin of the origjnal tab? What about going forward - does it reopen tabs? I would have thought the extra bf caching required would be a challenge - especially on mobile.
And is it affected by whether you opted to open a link in a new tab, as opposed to the OP's example of a link that automatically does?

I've used Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox for years - it's never done that. On Android I normally use Firefox - it doesn't. I just tried Chrome on Android (Android 7.1) and it doesn't either.
On Linux I just tried Chromium - it doesn't.

Good idea. Safari (at least on iOS) has the same behavior.
Personally I'd rather not have links open in new pages, unless I select to do so (e.g. with context menu or middle click), but this has unfortunately become standard lately and having the back button to salvage the broken design of webpages is an OK workaround for me.
