One of the main drawbacks of the otherwise great N9 (still unmatched in many aspects compared to Jolla TOH, but i'm sure this will change soon for better) was its lack of support for business use. While I acknowledge, that it may not be the primary target at this moment, let's discuss the main requirements needed for use in a business environment (many of those are already subjects in other questions here):

A) Sailfish OS

  1. WPA2 Enterprise: works already through command line configuration. Needs a menu in settings for setup.
  2. VPN: support for different protocols like OpenVPN (already supported unofficially), IPSec (IKEv2), Cisco SSL.
  3. Using Shares: support CIFS (smbclient) and NFS protocols, mount support through File Browser or 3rd party App
  4. Storage in general: general App integration of cloud storage, shares and external sd-card
  5. Lockscreen at a glance: very important to have a lockscreen with configurable informations (like N9 with a 3rd App): time, date, calendar meetings, weather and others
  6. Privacy: rethink and implement more optional security and privacy settings, for the OS and also per App. Display the access to fuctions and data of Apps and enforce to accept them before installation.
  7. Overall experience: auto screen rotation, refining some swipes/gestures, Folders (!)
  8. Multimedia: standard support for more codecs
  9. Keyboard: individual keyboard configuration
  10. Fonts: improve, change font size easily
  11. Copy/Cut/paste Functionality through the whole OS and Apps
  12. Display out: no idea how though...see other threads
  13. Support SIP protocol
  14. Security: optional device encryption from startup
  15. Support for 4G/LTE

B) Standard Jolla Apps

  1. E-Mail Client: improve E-Mail Client (see other posts)
  2. Calendar: improve (see other posts, regarding handling, connections, display and views (weekly view!) and so on)
  3. Contacts: improve
  4. Clock and Alarm: improve. Include sleep functionality for closing apps.
  5. "Here" Maps and Navigation: improve, add offline maps. Or maybe a 3rd party App for Openmaps.
  6. Security: Anti-Malware software (ClamAV?), Firewall settings (only with activated developer mode), Certificate Management
  7. File Browser: more functionality or better 3rd party App
  8. Office: improve view and handling of MS-Office, Openoffice and PDF documents (no editing needed here, but copy paste)
  9. Phone and Messages: improve (call and log management, MMS ...)

C) Native 3rd party Apps (Android Apps should be only a last resort)

  1. System utilities: WiFi analyzer, Network discovery,
  2. Office: PDF editor (marking, correcting, drawing), business calc, ...
  3. Kindle: any possibility to get a native Kindle App? But at least other eBook readers
  4. Security: Password managers (already in the store), Crypto containers
  5. Graphical Notebook (similar to Xournal): sketch/write quickly some notes with your finger (someone tried a pen already?)
  6. Social Media: native Linkedin and Xing Apps. Always implement a clean logout functionality for all Social media Apps!
  7. Storage and Sharing: better File Browser, support for other cloud storage, including ownCloud
  8. Multimedia: improve Mediaplayer (see other posts), support hardware button when locked for start/stop/skip
  9. Audio: audio note taker/recorder
  10. TV: some TV/News Channels App would be nice
  11. Stocks: some stocks App maybe, to follow Jollas success...? :-)
  12. Internet Browsers: Firefox, Opera...
  13. Multipurpose Database: some kind of database or spreadsheet with GUI and editing
  14. Skype and VoIP-SIP Apps
  15. Scanning: photo scan and OCR (for vCards and other uses)
  16. Remote connections: VNC, RDP, maybe VMWare/Citrix (well, not really useful with this size)
  17. Automatic profile switcher
  18. ... and for the stressed manager... some standard games like patiences, Angry Birds and others :-)

Well, I finish here, or it will get longer. Of course, this list is very subjective, some things may be already solved or are on the roadmap, and the list is not in any priority sort order. Up to you to comment, criticize, extend, ... Keeping in mind that the focus should be helping Jolla TOH (or its successor) to find its way into business and non-devels power users too.

One issue to think about is, that, while I personally prefer and support free and open source software, high quality 3rd party business-near Apps will usually not come for free. So, it will be crucial to implement some sort of commercial section inside the Jolla shop.

Cheers, manuel

This looks more like a wish-list to generally improve the phone, to business users as well as others. But on the other hand it's a list to be considered (with varying priorities obviously)

@Cary: yes, I agree, it's about some hypothetical power business user with some technical flair :-) But I think basically the business case requires and assumes good and secure connectivity in every way - this means not only network connectivity and traditional applications like E-Mail, but also good "connections" to services, documents and between Apps. Hence many listed points deal with basic features that are useful to other user types of course.

So, given a number of other posts related to this particular point, Jolla will hopefully be concentrating on getting the whole WLAN stack working properly and reliably ...

@myself -:) Going through the above list after having successfully updated to 1.0.3.8, there are no relevant improvements to those topics. I still think, that, imho, the following requests would greatly improve the usability and acceptance of Jolla for business use:

  • Implement WPA2 enterprise in settings
  • Implement smbclient for accessing/mounting remote CIFS shares
  • Implement VPN (this might be a larger workpackage, we need openvpn, ipsec and cisco ssl)
  • Implement general usage of storage options (local, ext. sd-card, remote share, cloud storages) for every Jolla app
  • Improve lockscreen information display

Jolla native apps have been slightly improved or stabilized, but many wishes and suggestions remain open (see many threads in this forum). Properly and powerful working of Calendar and E-Mail are surely at the top of this list. I'd also consider a navigation app based on downloadable "here" maps quite useful, but that's a matter of personal preference. More important - again - is the possibility of adding commercial apps to the Jolla store. I am willing to pay for good apps, the same way I did for the N9.

Yes, I agree with all points of the list. I still have to use my old mobile phone (N9) because the jolla phone is not a finished product.

I want to propose an answer to this in following with the #unlike theme of things: Business-centric functionality should be able to be programmed into custom TOH rear shells that companies can imprint with (a) a company logo and (b) some kind of ID icon/number personalized to the owner, department, and their role. In this way, the idea of making the Jolla or aspects of SailfishOS fit for business use finds some context to stand on in some environments.

Such an approach could lead to a (probably correct) splintering of the Jolla SDK for enterprise-types of features (explained in the initial question), and a means to develop parts of the platform with enterprise-backing that allows for the faster and more through-maturing of various features (I'm think from UI aspects like accessibility features, to niche-but-nice features like document/project workflow integration agents to push along business processes).

If such is done, then the apps/service hooks explained in the initial question will not just be improved, but there can be some definitive focus to them which would allow SailfishOS to catch the right kind of attention from the CIO/IT/IS department. Whatever the initial business-use feature is though, it needs to be done well, and come across much easier to admin/use/promote than current or soon-coming solutions.

@arjwright: I think this is an excellent idea, to develop enterprise specific, custom OHs, which would offer not only a set of specially adapted apps, but also some kind of enterprise tailored security. Maybe such an OH could even add a second SIM card or 2way authentication method. And after work you could just exchange the enterprise OH with your private one again...

I like the idea, but I do not think that any of the apps and improvements aforementioned is business orientated only, apart form OH providing a h/w modules, e.g. security ID, etc.

Avaya, Nortel and Juniper VPN clients should be a requirement as well. Citrix receiver and webex are heavily used in large corporations. Beside SIP, SCCP client for Cisco Unified Communication Manager is a must for a business phone. And most important, ActiveSync client for Microsoft Exchange with all Micro$oft associated security policies, calendar sync etc. Active Sync client must work like a charm, otherwise no chance for Jolla to enter in the business game.

I chose Jolla because it has a good potential to become a trustworthy smartphone, which lets users keep their Privacy and Peace of Mind through frequent Security Updates and which that has no built-in back door or is as insecure as Android. Security and Privacy-related development should be put front and center, so I support the above idea of: Good, built-in with Password managers that is part of the Jolla Security system, Crypto containers. Please also thoroughly test for OpenSSL bugs.

I am late seeing this so I apologise if this is already answered, but I think the main killer requirement for business is ease of use. Business use needs a simple gui control of everything, including setting up VPNs and firewalls, if possible. Blackberry would also be a good model to compete with for its comunications security, but obviously Jolla could not provide anything like the Blackberry infrastructure.

Some items (VPN, certificate management, WPA etc) are on the roadmap. They should have had higher priority IMO but everyone including jolla have different definitions of important.
