I was wondering if it's possible to set the default (preferred) message type for Messaging system app so that the system suggests that at first (default seems to be the message type used by the other party in previous message)?

Currently it's pretty easy to use "wrong" bearer e.g. in situation where recipient has recently sent an SMS and before that IM and I'd like to contact him/her via IM but the latest received message is SMS.

If not already ther^H^H^H^Hsomewhere, I'd suggest adding a user-changable setting (Settings - Apps - Messaging) that allows one to choose either the current default behaviour or to define a priority order of messaging types (e.g. if contact has Google talk, try that first, if not, try Jabber, if not, try SMS. It probably also requires a toggle like "Require IM online status" (if checked, it chooses by default the highest priority message type where the recipient is reported to be online).

I have a relevant request here https://together.jolla.com/question/17830/ui-display-recipientsender-phone-type-in-smscall-history-view/ to make SMS and Call types more clear to user.

Yep, that is related, also there is a related question that requests to make the message type selection in Messaging app more clear in the UI: https://together.jolla.com/question/17867/messages-change-type-ui-design-not-clear-enough/

Use voting feature ("arrow up") to support the idea (and in this kind of matters prefer commenting instead of an answer because that doesn't mark this question as answered without any "real answer").
