Backup tool appears not to see SD card (Hossa)

I've factory reset my Jolla 1 and successfully updated it to Hossa (3.0.3.10). Problem is the Settings/Backup tool can't see the SD card, "Back up data to" and "Restore data from" buttons are greyed out and it says "No previous backups found", although there is a known good backup in the root directory of the card (I was able to restore that backup to my spare Jolla 1 on Oulanka 3.0.2.8 no problem) and Settings/Storage, File Browser, sftp and the Terminal can all see the SD card and the backup file.

I tried again with a different SD card, formatted it fat32 on the Jolla, sftp'd the backup file onto it, still no go. No backup device seen (although again the card is visible in File Browser, Settings/Storage, Terminal, sftp)

Any ideas? I'd rather get this Jolla working as the spare one has an intermittent connection at the speaker. Could there be a missing package somehow? or how can I manually restore the files from the backup? Thanks.

If it helps, all updates up to and including Oulanka were through the GUI and had no problems, Hossa update failed through the GUI but worked first time through the command line.

Opening the backup file using File Manager under Oulanka shows the contents of the archive, opening the same backup file in Hossa says "could not open archive" at the top of the screen and "No files" in the centre of the screen. But "View Contents" in File Manager in Hossa shows the list of files and folders.

OK this is strange.

There was no indication in Hossa in the GUI that the backup tool could see the SD card at all. But when I tapped on the "restore from" text, then the SD card and the backup file appeared and I could restore from it.

Oulanka with the same memory card isn't like that, I could straight away see the SD card both for reading and writing in the Backup tool, and it automatically showed the file/date/time of the backup which was on the card.

Bug? or just an undocumented feature :/

This is a known issue, see https://together.jolla.com/question/193024/backup-menu/ It should have been fixed in 3.0.3 according to release notes of Hossa, strange that it still occurs in your case.

@tux_in_iE Your comment finally saved my ability to backup on XA2.

IIRC the backup worked fine in 3.0.2.8. But after it was grayed out and tried everything in already mention thread and more. Reflashing, remounting, reinserting, rebooting, upgrading to 3.0.2.10, another SD, fat, ext3,.... In the process I have lost some mostly nonvital data. Scary experiance.

That taping workaround is trivial but even 'virtual' inability to backup is serious bug IMHO.

Hi @Pohli, my issue is different as I was not getting the "There is no memory card or cloud storage" message, and opening up Backup multiple times did not solve the issue, but thanks for your comment.

It is not only in his case.

It is quite strange: you see some text and an underlying greyed out button. So first impression is: oh not working! But when you click on that 'random' text -not in any way indicating it could be meant as selector- then a selection pops uo. This was also in earlier releases of SFOS and definitely not a good UI.

BTW regarding selector: why do we have to select the ONLY possibility me/SFOS will accept (another rant) A selection would make sense if Jolla would not have ripped out the possibility to backup to phone memory.

I just had the same experience. I had to get a shock when my jolla said there are no backups available. But the trick with the click on the text "Stelle Daten wiederher von" then brought it.

Observed the same behavior with 3.0.3.9 and 3.0.10.
IMHO that is an UX regression introduced with the fix for above mentioned issue
hadn't seen the more recent comments to the question. retagged as ux and regression
