Where else than the clock app? I think the implementation there is just fine.

the dialer for example, and they ruined the fantastic people app...

i will see if i can post the clock app...

I found screenshots of clock and phone app on Telegram. so I deleted my post probably just before your answer.

Actually I prefer these tabs. In the clock app, there's more than enough screen estate for them, no reason to hide these options behind a pully.

And how ugly they :-D

Actually, the re-design makes sense for me. They kept the pulley-menus for action, while common display-categories are now represented as tabs.
This is similar to what the Piepmatz Twitter client does.

Totally in support of the tabs in this, it makes more sense and is much easier as gestures go.

Seeing the tabs made me think twice...

It's actually quite efficient; certainly faster than using pulley menu items and selecting the wrong menu item by accident is no longer an issue. The best example is the Phone app; try to enter a number in a hurry using the pulley menu...

Even though Sailfish OS has different UI, doesn't mean it has to blindly stick to its ways. SFOS has pulley menus, yes, but it doesn't make sense to cram everything in them. I think this is a good change usability-wise, but it needs some make up.

I quite like the new calling app and people app! Looks much better and also works faster atleast under my fingertips.

I agree with Direc but ... Now I can not reach those tabs from the bottom (I have to use second hand) and I am with the small XA. It would be better if the tabs are on to bottom on the screen for that manner.

@vatman, you can just swipe left and right, same way you would with attached pages. I honestly like it, it's like Windows Phone's pivot control.

For me as a developer: If this style is intended for future apps: Will there be some SilicaTab stuff in qml?

My PodQast app would be way more intuitive if I had a tab bar...

cy8aer ( 2019-07-19 08:48:17 +0300 )edit

@cy8aer I hope the next SDK update contains that stuff. However, it makes the app SFOS 3.1.0+ only. (Personally I don't mind, but some users still stick with SFOS 2...)

Direc ( 2019-07-19 09:19:04 +0300 )edit

i don't know, i disagree with tabs, i liked them in windows phone but if i wanted something tabbed i would have stayed windows phone, and to me pulleys where even faster...

247 ( 2019-07-19 10:02:00 +0300 )edit

@Direc: if they just use standard qml stuff and only make a recipe how to use it there will be a chance for <3.x...

cy8aer ( 2019-07-19 10:05:03 +0300 )edit

@247: If you need to have more functionality on one page you get problems how to implement it without breaking UI rules. You know "Not more than 3 entries" and stuff like this...

Ok, you have pulley up, pulley down. But if you want to have still more fast accessible functions there will be limits. Of course it depends if tabs are the answer to everything. Probably a discussion is needed how you can handle such requirements in general.

For me the tabs are to big and there should be some design to show that there are tabs (here you only have some text, no buttons in a line or so). It works with three entries only (another limit because of page space), and so on...

How often do I use this (alarm page)? How important is this change for me?

How often do I search contacts? How important is it to choose the appositely account for adding a new contact?

How often do I use a browser? How important I a good working browser for me?

I'm focusing on needed things, not about work procurement of UI designers.

i agree, the ui was working well and there was no need to redesign everything while they could work on improving the camera quality for example or other useful things...

247 ( 2019-07-19 11:20:47 +0300 )edit

I really like tabs in Phone and Clock apps. The only thing I don't like about tabs is they are not compatible with ambiences from TOHs.

atlochowski ( 2019-07-19 12:46:09 +0300 )edit

@pisarz1958, @ Direc: or the change between the screens (tabs) should be done by gestures like in "Calendar". Here you can swipe to choose "Save" or "Cancel". Why couldn't it be this way in "Clock": swipe changes between Alarm/Timer/Stopwatch? You don't have to hide it behind a pulley menu, it could be visible as it is in other apps not in tabs but more Sailfish-like.

I like what i've seen so far (in screenshots). The new tabbed phone app is an implementation of an idea that has been proposed by the community a while ago. The only thing i'd do differently is put the dialler in the middle (and default to that) so you are one swipe away from each option. Also the new lettered scroller has been asked since forever.

I really liked the mosaic in People app, but I gotta admit, the scroller works better. It just feels a lot less sailfish-y, but I'll take it!

I cant's say new design is bad, actually it seems to be good, esp integration with people app which was kinda redundant from the very beginning. Maybe some polish to the visual side, but I like the general idea of one app for all phone activities.

"The only thing i'd do differently is put the dialler in the middle (and default to that) so you are one swipe away from each option."

You're still one swipe away, from each option, it loops around.

nthn ( 2019-07-23 00:32:55 +0300 )edit

Imho thats just design error - it could work without tabs. Put History, Contacts and Dialer in one app, but remove those ugly tabs. Random Joe uses gestures and can "swipe" between those three and he will notice the difference! Put it in "Tutorial", case closed.

Piotr ( 2019-07-23 00:38:51 +0300 )edit

I was afraid that there are really tabs that i have to click on, as i did read this post. For me its not so bad to swipe between the different views.

Looks like you never used Nokia's N9, predecessor of Jolla company at all. Hello tabs again, not "really? ".

It's crazy, the first couple of years people were complaining day in day out that the UI didn't resemble the N9 enough, now with Sailfish 2 and 3 Jolla has reverted to a more N9-like UI (nearly all changes have been for the best, objectively speaking), and people complain it's "literally Android". As long as they have something to complain about.

nthn ( 2019-07-24 19:40:35 +0300 )edit

At the time i had a windows phone, and i decided to switch to sailfish just because of it's fantastic ui, which was completely tabless and buttonless

I'm still wondering what problems were solved and especially why those were prioritized above the issues that have a fair amount of votes on tjc...

Well, sorry for sailors, but I have to say: this new phone app sucks. Not sure what "studies" was happening, but it seems that it's like "lets throw tabs and shit together in one app yey!". Theres a pulley in Friends with Find and pulley is visible only when you are on top... and, over there on top, just below those cool tabs is "find". Do we need two Finds to find something?

I liked dialer on top of the "history" screen.

Sometimes Im using "the other hand" for the phone - mosaic was, by default, both hands friendly.

I would love chronological history. I called A, then got a call from B, then got a call from A, then called A and then B. It should be: B A «A «B A

and in history it still is just: B A

I dont like new icons in history. Previous icons where self explaining. I call A, no icons! B called me, small arrow. Simple stuff. We dont need tons of emoji to check call history.

Another note: I would love "activity history" - like this one above + messages (mms/sms).

I love the new design.I guess its about taste end each has his/her own preference.Guess Jolla won't be able to please ever one...

This isnt just about like it or not, it about your own style. And Sailfish just lost it. "Lets go the way everybody is going!"...

Why tabs? Why not use those pretty dots like in Mail? Same thing, but it looks Sailfish.

Piotr ( 2019-07-23 13:58:05 +0300 )edit

@babo PS Try to use Contacts with your left hand. Unusable. Mosaic was, as I said before, usable with right or left hand (not right AND left together).

Piotr ( 2019-07-23 14:28:59 +0300 )edit

I am right handed. But it works pretty much the same with my left hand.

I cant see what makes it unusable.

hein ( 2019-07-24 20:52:53 +0300 )edit

It may depend on the device. On an XA2, the quick letter navigation is probably manageable with either hand. Bump up to the Plus/Ultra though, and it's a stretch, I'm sure.

I personally wouldn't mind if, much like dragging through long lists in Media, the letter bar showed up, but on the bottom instead. Reachable no matter what hand on what device, and persists on the gestures. I wouldn't mind that being the case for the arrows as well, just have it at the bottom instead of being right-biased.
