[FIXED] XA2 / Sailfish 3.x: wifi hotspot fails to give access Linux Mint laptop, works on other machines

I have a white MacBook dualbooting to OS X 10.6.8 and Linux Mint 19.1, and the weirdest problem with XA2 wifi hotspot.
When I try to share my mobile connection by creating a wifi hotspot on my XA2 running Sailfish OS, I can get the wifi connection up and to the OS X (and to my Aqua Fish too) and it connects to the internet.
I fail to do that for Linux Mint. The issue was already in 3.0.3.10 and persists in 3.1.0.11. On my Aqua Fish with 3.0.3.10 the connection sharing to Linux Mint worked ok.
Linux Mint connects to the wifi network created by XA2, but Chromium doesn't load web pages. Instead it notifies "resolving hosts" and soon after tells me I have no connection. The same Linux Mint connects to my home wifi router and gets internet access without problems.

It looks to my untrained eye like some sort of authentication fails when the laptop is connecting to the wifi, and the DNS name service provided by the Sailfish hotspot can't do its tricks with the degraded TCP.
I think the "timeout" mentioned in both devices' logs is the culprit.

lzbk ( 2019-07-22 18:54:09 +0300 )edit@Chris_ this Macbook model has a bit iffy wifi card for Linux purposes.... Broadcom BCM4321. Apparently there aren't alternative drivers except this one, or then I just failed to find any. So, I would have, but couldn't.
It's actually the only third party driver that Linux Mint's "Update Drivers" finds in my system. Everything else is pretty much vanilla.
edit: Actually I'm wrong. There are options, they just weren't in the boot stick I was restricted to in lieu of internet connection. I'll try switching bcmwl-kernel-source to broadcom-sta-source.
@lzbk it's good that we know that XA2 with 3.0.3.10 and Linux Mint 19.1 is a combo that some has got working properly. It probably means that I personally got something funny going on and it's not a universal issue.

Turns out that nowadays the Linux kernel supports this particular wifi card with the b43 kernel driver, but the wifi card first needs to be jolted in line with firmware-b43-installer.
But I had had bcmwl-kernel-source automatically installed instead to drive the wifi card, and it had worked mostly correct but failed in these particular circumstances. Our with the source, in with the firmware, and now my Linux Mint 19.1 gets online through my XA2 hotspot.
