I have never understood the advantages of having the charging port on top of the phone. Does anyone have a clue why some phones have this?

Advantages:

  • If you have got a power plug in front of your desk then it's a bit better if the charging port is on top

Some disadvantages:

  • If the cable is too short sometimes then it will make it even shorter because it has to be plugged in from the top while keeping the phone upright
  • Cannot be charged with a dock (no wireless charging for the moment)
  • More difficult to talk on the phone while charging

If you want to use your phone while charging it's more convenient to have the charging port on top otherwise you have to bend the cable beneath the phone in an odd way.

@Xiph I would say exactly the opposite. If the charger port is on the bottom, you can hold the phone like it was the receiver of an ancient analog telephone. Comparing the Jolla to (example) the Samsung Galaxy S3 the location of the port is much better with the S3.

Usually power plugs are lower than your ear. In Finland usually close to the floors and sometimes at waist height :) That said the cable comes from a lower point and has to bend before going into the phone. The extra bending will take maybe 20cm of cable length.

My idea is to engineer together an other half that offers a bottom micro usb connector and a flat wiring attached to the TOH that matches the power pins available fron Jolla (next to the SIM card slot if I remember correctly). It may be considered also whether the top USB port should be hidden by the TOH

I'm not an expert but my best guess is it might have something to do with the circuit design to make the phone smaller/make everything fit nicely? The phone itself is quite thin and you don't have all the space in the world to place and wire every component where you originally want.

One advantage is car phone mounts. If the port is on the bottom it is often covered when the phone is in the holder unless the mount is designed specifically for the phone and allows a cable to go through at the bottom.

Yes, that's kinda true but then again there's so many car holder alternatives out there. My universal holder has worked for 3-4 different phones and the only issue was with my N9 because the twisted charging cable was pulling it downwards. N9 also had the charging plug on top.

Actually the opposite. If I mount it vartically in my car, then the connector has to bend and stretch the spiral cord, which I am afraid will break the µUsb socket like the N900. If I mount it horizontally, it's exactly on the wrong side again, except if you live in the UK or Australia (Asia?)
