Android_storage maximum size?

I have a Xperia XA2 plus dual sim with a freshly installed 3.1.0.11

I have installed MicroG and everything is working well until I upload the WhatsApp backup (5.6 Gb) to android_storage through mtp. After that all the android applications keep crashing and the journalctl shows aliendalvik restarting every 3 minutes.

After removing the 5.6 WhatsApp folder Android is still broken. Reinstalling Android from the Jolla store does not solve the problem and the only solution is a factory reset. I have repeated this process a couple of times.

Could this be because I am going over a limit? Can that limit be incresed?

The partition itself is ~18 GiB in total, it's definitely not a space problem.

I've done similar large-scale restores, without any problem.

The difference is that I use SSH (rsync over ssh in my case, but it should work with SFTP or SCP too). The other difference is that I've stopped android before restoring the data and only restarted it after the copy finished.

Maybe MTP is broken? Maybe WhatsApp dislikes its data being overwritten while it is running?

Checking journalctl -u aliendalvik reports that /home/nemo/android_storage is not mounted and that is why is aliendalvik is failing and restarting. I was not stopping android before copying so that might have somehow broken the android_storage binding. DrYak might be right. I will do a factory reset, stop aliendalvik copy the files through ssh and report back.
