On Xperia X: Wake up the device by pressing the power button, then don’t let go of the fingerprint reader. This results in fpslave continuously using close to 100% CPU time until the device returns to sleep or the finger is removed from the reader.
I think this could be more efficient. Is fpslave “polling” at a high frequency?

Well, at least in theory fpslave just initiates authentication and then waits notifications from android hal i.e. no polling at sfos sw level. Judging by logcat android fp hal in Xperia X is constantly doing something (and logging it too). Since hal is accessed via dynamic libraries/plugins, this activity gets attributed to fpslave process.
