Other phone OS (iOS, Android, Windows, my old feature phones back to 2000!) constanly show the signal strength icon on the display screen - usually at the top, but it's pretty much always on screen

Sailfish doesn't - the only time it shows is when you unlock & start to drag up from or down to the lockscreen

This isn't particularly useful.

Wouldn't it be more sensible to replicate the way things like signal, remaining battery etc are shown on virtually every other mobile phone?

I appreciate that Jolla/Sailfish is trying to differentiate itself, but not displaying this info on very current screen seems a little self defeating, as it is key information - especially if you're trying to make a call!

Likewise the connection icon (those 2 triangles that overlap each other) should be in the same information bar throughout the phone

I find it OK not to clutter the screen with this quite static information. Anyway, you need extra microphone/earplug system if you like to observe this information while making a call. I would rather have an app providing the information and I can choose myself the information I need.

One of the goals of the UI was to remove these from the screen, this giving more real estate to applications. It's hardly onerous to peek at the info whenever you need it (just a slow swipe from the top of the screen in any application, not just from lock screen, including when making a call.)

If you're in an application - the browser for example, it's not something you can "peek" at.

If you're trying to get a signal for Maps, it's not something you can "peek " at

Implementing these useful pieces of information would harly impact on screen real estate

@Cosmic_Kakapo i just tested this, and now i know about it, it makes sense and fits with the overall UX.

At first, i wanted to always see the clock on the top bar, but with the "peek from side", there is no need as i can easily get to the time whenever i need it, without sacrificing pixels
