Hello Jolla devs,

i've shortly upgrade my XA2+ with the last version. And i must i'm really impressed.
The fingerprint works for me (still) stable and good.

I find quite good that the phone doesn't open directly to home after the first fingerprint action. Sometimes to get phone out of the pocket i pull my finger on sensor accidentally.

But i find that is a little bit a nonsense for me to land onto the password keyboard to unlock. I represented myself to get the lock screen, with current-time, weather, access on photo-app. like the power button do.

Please dear jolla devs, it would be nice to have it in this way or to have the choice in settings in which position it wakes up by first fingerprint action.

Feedback on v3.3.0.16:
Point described above still in current version.
If interface has faced with too many failed recognition, it informs that the only way to unlock is to give the security code with numpad. No way to be reinit after a while, it still block on it, even if it recognize a print again for wake the device up (the 1st time), 2nd no reaction (you should give the number in numpad). That's a little bit inconsistent...

Great job. Have a good sail. Cheers

Same for me, fingerprint unlock is pointless when done this way. It works as a replacement for the power button. It should work as a replacement for the unlock code, i. e. to unlock the phone EITHER I push the power button and then enter the code, OR use the fingerprint without the need to enter the code.

good idea! The current method is confusing.

SInce we are speaking about it, I wouldn't mind a clock on the lock screen with the numeric PIN keyboard. Sometimes I turn the phone on just to look at the time, and I find myself stuck on that screen without a clock.

But direct unlock would be nice as an option. I used Android device with direct unlock - it was absolutely OK with my pockets and with my way of grip.

Currently fingerprint wake up is analogous to double power key press behavior:

  1. display is powered up
  2. lockscreen deactivation request is made

What (2) does depends on device lock state:

  • device is not locked -> home/active application is shown
  • device is locked -> unlock view within lockscreen is shown (i.e. the thing you do not wish to see)

I gather you'd like it like:

  1. power up display
  2. if device is not locked, request lockscreen deactivation

With behavior like:

  • device is not locked -> home/active application is shown
  • device is locked -> default lockscreen view is shown

Which would be something in between single and double power key press behavior.

I filed an internal ticket for making fp wake up behavior tweakable similarly as what is possible with power key, double tap, etc.

EDIT 2019-09-30:

The feature is called fingerprint wakeup for a reason: It wakes up the phone, it does not unlock a locked phone.

In practice this means: Tweaking wakeup behavior is possible, but directly unlocking sleeping phone would be completely different thing, requires architectural changes etc, and thus AFAIK is not going to happen anytime soon.

An attempt to explain why it is like it is can be found in here:

https://together.jolla.com/question/209614/fingerprint-reader-unlimited-retries-when-display-is-off/?answer=210577#post-id-210577

EDIT 2019-10-24:

Pull request at: https://git.merproject.org/mer-core/mce/merge_requests/131

After which one can use mcetool for tweaking fingerprint wake up behavior for example as follows:

mcetool --set-touchscreen-gesture-actions=fpwakeup,unblank,tkunlock

The original/default behavior.

mcetool --set-touchscreen-gesture-actions=fpwakeup,unblank,tkunlock2

Exits from lockscreen only if device is not locked. This is basically how @cemoi71 wanted it to behave i.e. if device is locked, the 1st tap on fp sensor wakes up display to lockscreen and 2nd tap unlocks the device and shows home/app.

mcetool --set-touchscreen-gesture-actions=fpwakeup,unblank

Just wakes up display, leaving lockscreen status as it is.

EDIT 2019-11-12:

The functionality described above should be available in SFOS >= 3.2.1 releases.

yep! you got it :-)
my device is locked, if i push the power button i could see the lockscreen with clock and diverse status on top.
Make for me sense to have the same if i press only one time the finger on the sensor of fingerprint.
Why instead should i have the lockpad to give the number code if i can press the fingerprint again?
For me should be quite the same as for the double tap on the blackscreen (e.g. by jp1).
Thank you very much for your answer. Especially if you could insert it on your roadmap ( means requirement). have a nice sail, cheers!

No, I believe that fingerprint wakeup must do the same thing both with device locked and not locked, i. e. show the home screen, otherwise I don't see the point in recognizing a fingerprint. You could as well do what it does now with any touch on the sensor by any finger of any person. The fingerprint recognizing must replace typing the unlock code. It works this way on any other phone I know.

@Giacomo Di Giacomo what do you mean maybe for both ?

device is not locked -> default lockscreen view is shown
device is locked -> default lockscreen view is shown

???

Whatever, either home screen or lockscreen, but definitely the fingerprint unlock must bypass the typing of the code.

yes yes i made a second answer for second suggestion. you may rework it for better wording. strangely i couldn't put some pictures for better understanding....

I wanted to give an alternative to the answer of spiiroin, with a small difference...

Even if the device is locked or not:
1) first finger-pull make display power up and display lockscreen with status and clock (no unlock keypad view, that currently present). First picture => here

2) Second pull on sensor home/active application in cover is shown

Cheers

@cemoi71 What you describe is "make it work like single power key press" - which is doable in addition to already implemented "like double power key press" and "something in between single and double power key press behavior" mentioned earlier.

spiiroin ( 2019-09-30 10:10:51 +0300 )edit

@spiiroin yes...
Your proposal or idea (i don't know) is for me quite ok too. mine or yours is good for me.
I'll enjoy that one of both is implemented. You may decide which one
Hope only that is doable for your people. ;-)
