The my landline phone sends voicemail.wav files via email to my Jolla. media player opens them and the dislplay looks like it was playing, but there is no sound. Android phones play those files correctly. What could be the problem? Why does media player not inform of a unsupported media format?

Might be some uncommon encoding. Do you have a sample?

I just tested a wav file with 48 kHz. I also converted it to 44.1 kHz, 22.05 kHz and 8 bit with SoX. They all played fine on a Jolla Phone with SFOS 3.0.1.11.

couldn't upload a file, but here's a link of my (evil) google folder containing that file https://drive.google.com/open?id=1oVy3bwDO-om8JzXJgpPb5qmqxjLkD2mu

Update: confimed.

zypper install ffmpeg-tools
ffprobe voicemail.wav
Input #0, wav, from 'Downloads/voicemail.wav':
  Duration: 00:00:37.36, bitrate: 13 kb/s
    Stream #0:0: Audio: gsm_ms (1[0][0][0] / 0x0031), 8000 Hz, 1 channels, 13 kb/s
Unsupported codec with id 86046 for input stream 0

You need the 'ugly' plug-in of GStreamer for LLs vPlayer to open it.

I am ready to bet that they are compressed with GSM AMR (which is heavily patented, not supported straight out of the box on Sailfish, but is still found around on some voicemails).

You'd need to:

  • either install a separate player that has the codecs (i think i used LLs vPlayer last time ?)
  • or use an Android player (Android should comes with a licensed codec out of the box)

This is possible. It comes from a UPC phone system. This .wav file plays ok on my Android phone, and in plays well on my macintosh computer. Sof far, I only clicked the attachment in sailfish mail so it opened in media player. I don't even know where Saifish mail attachments are stored on my device.

in Downloads/mail_attachments

Thanks a bunch! I will try this (and change my phone provider soon).

i tried with that GStreamer plugin 'ugly', but it needs to be installed manually due to broken dependencies. (I simply choose ignoring the missing deps).

Check, maybe with the plugin it works even in Mail?

(I basically had the exact same problem, except back then my provider sent voicemails as MMS attachments instead of e-mail. I recently changed plan, but nobody at the provider knew how to turn the feature back on.)
