As far as I know, the Jolla devices are just missing a [baseband] firmware update in order to enable 4G/LTE for mobile data connections. I also read somewhere (including a photo with a Jolla showing a 4G indicator) that the 4G update is already being tested. So, please use this request to keep us informed. :o)

I had no idea this actually was in the "specs", but I'm really glad it is then :D

Yes, 4G LTE is part of the Jolla specs! :)

Can we close this question as it has received an answer?

The website of Jolla has now updated saying:

Supported in Finland during Q2/2014, other countries and operators to be announced at a later date.

I must say that this is frustratring. If you take a look below, you can see that this has been "maybe"-announced for a few earlier updates, and "non-maybe" for this update. But now, only Finland. At this point, I'm counting on getting 4G by the end of the year, maybe.

Yes, new features will start shipping at Q1.

Should your answer be read as "4G will start shipping at Q1" or "some new features will start shipping at Q1"? (not voting until cleared out). Anyway, waiting for LTE to be there and hoping that answers here are for clearing out when & speculations / other posts are sent as comments.

There's no public ETA for LTE yet but all I can say that some new features will start shipping at Q1. It might or might not include LTE depending how mature is the feature seen for the public release.

tigeli ( 2013-12-26 01:53:42 +0300 )edit

When you say shipping, you're saying released as an update, only required new firmware at most, correct?

Chinoman10 ( 2013-12-26 02:07:03 +0300 )edit

Yes it will be an over the air update, that's what @tigeli meant with 'shipping a new release'

Well, I was hoping for some abstract insights on the current status of 4G / LTE testing... :o)

You can enable and test LTE with this dbus magic.

ENABLE LTE:

dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.ofono /ril_0 org.ofono.RadioSettings.SetProperty string:"TechnologyPreference" variant:string:"lte"

DISABLE LTE:

dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.ofono /ril_0 org.ofono.RadioSettings.SetProperty string:"TechnologyPreference" variant:string:"umts"

Picked from Finnish Jolla user discussion thread, not tested personally (yet, currently away of the LTE coverage).

Be careful - this may break your device and blow your data plan - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

LTE MODE DISABLES CALL/SMS -functions until changed back to umts -mode.

Here we go with LTE (tested by cinse):

There is an app on openrepos that allows this 3G/4G toggling.

I enabled the 4G mode using the app from Openrepos. The data transfers are quite fast but I can't make phone calls while on 4G mode, any idea why? I am in Germany and I have Deutsche Telekom as provider.

@Cristian Magherusan-Stanciu LTE-mode disables Call/SMS in the phone.

SMS is working (send and receive) for me when enabling 4G, Sonera network in Finland.

what happens if you set it to "any"?

dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.ofono /ril_0 org.ofono.RadioSettings.SetProperty string:"TechnologyPreference" variant:string:"any"

according to the ofono docs the phone should then select what ever has the best signal: http://git.kernel.org/cgit/network/ofono/ofono.git/tree/doc/radio-settings-api.txt

As I have written in this post 4G very likely will be enabled with March update as the 4G icon is visible in a jolla phone (that had the march updates installed) held by Stefano Mosconi at MWC

That's great news! Let's hope it will be officially enabled then :)

Doh! It wasn't. Maybe Q2 then.

sigh :o)

Nirkus ( 2014-03-18 01:10:35 +0300 )edit

There is no way it won't come in the next update. At least an easy-to-use automatic toggle (between calls and LTE) is no effort and will be in the official Jolla OS menu and available as quick shortcut. During the time you're on the phone you won't need internet or SMS that urgently if you can have 4G-LTE before and after! :-)

While one can install an app from openrepos to switch between 4G and 2G/3G mode (or do the switch with some manual hacks), the Jolla device/firmware with v1.0.3.8 still seems to be missing CSFB (Circuit-Switched Fall-Back), which is required on most mobile networks for voice & messaging services. As I do not have an IMS (IP-Multimedia Subsystem) subscription, I cannot test whether the Jolla/device firmware supports pure IMS subscriptions (all services including voice and messaging over IP and therefore 4G).

So, looking forwards for the next Jolla system update...

Anyone knows if 1.0.4.20 has LTE enabled?

Nope, it does not. Same situation as with 1.0.3.8..

That was big disappointment that they didn't release it Ohijärvi. For my self the other changes wasn't so important. LTE was that which I really waited.

Yes dissapointing to me too as 4g is what I am waiting for

Just read that this i no more Beta but as LTE is lacking I should say still Beta

Dickus ( 2014-03-18 08:07:34 +0300 )edit

LTE is on the devices' feature list, so if this is not done, how can 1.0.4 be considered as non-beta?! First things first please! (once again)
