Translated Russian article:

The Ministry of Communications will offer China to conduct a population census in China using the Aurora OS

Earlier, Reuters reported that Huawei is in talks to install Aurora on its tablets for the census.

MOSCOW, September 13. / TASS /. The Ministry of Communications of the Russian Federation will offer China to conduct a population census in China using devices on the Russian operating system (OS) Aurora. Such an option will be proposed if the census in the Russian Federation is carried out using Chinese gadgets and the Russian OS, Deputy Minister Mikhail Mamonov told journalists.

Earlier, Reuters reported, citing two sources, that Chinese Huawei is negotiating the installation of Aurora to conduct a census on its tablets. We are talking about 360 thousand devices as part of a pilot project. At the same time, Rostelecom noted that the supplier of tablets will be determined in the fall in accordance with the “established procurement procedures” and on the basis of an open tender.

"We will offer the Chinese side the use of such an operating system for the needs of officials of the two countries. If now Huawei will be able to win the competition that Rostelecom will hold to purchase equipment for the census, then we can try the second stage to conduct the same census using the system “Aurora is in China,” he said following a closed meeting of the Subcommittee on Communications and Information Technology of the Russian-Chinese Commission on the preparation of regular meetings of heads of government.

Mamonov noted that laboratory experiments on installing Aurora on a Huawei device have been completed. “In general, the system“ lies ”with Huawei products, the expert report says. There is no insuperable rejection,” he concluded.

Competence Center in China

Open Mobile Platform LLC (a subsidiary of Rostelecom and the developer of the Aurora domestic mobile operating system) plans to open its own competence center in China to develop an ecosystem of applications running on this OS.

“We will invite colleagues to develop a joint plan for using Aurora before the end of the year. It is already clear that laboratories for working with Aurora will open in both Russia and China,” Mamonov said.

Rostelecom noted that the developer of the only domestic mobile operating system has been fruitfully cooperating with Chinese vendors, manufacturers of devices and software (software), for many years. "The company's management takes part in the meetings of the intergovernmental Sino-Russian commissions and working groups. At the last (September) meeting of the Sino-Russian working group on cooperation in the field of IT, the parties recognized the creation of a regional center of competence on the Aurora MOC in order to expand and deepen cooperation in the interests of developing the ecosystem of mobile applications on devices under its control. Currently, the parties are working on the issue at the expert level, "TASS said in the press service of Rostelecom.

Aurora (formerly called Sailfish Mobile OS Rus) is the first domestic mobile operating system developed on the basis of the open Sailfish platform from the Finnish Jolla, created by former Nokia employees. According to the developers, devices based on Aurora will be able to ensure the security of data transmission in the public sector, the corporate sector and for ordinary consumers who care about privacy. The system can be installed on any mobile device, successfully passed certification tests of the FSB of Russia, registered by Rospatent and entered into the register of domestic software.

Yes, indeed. The "free world" isn't free enough to do the same.

The main problem, however, are the users who believe they can not live without Android. They do not want any alternative, unless ALL Android apps are running :-)

@kaktux: what's wrong with that? A census is not surveillance, and not a negative thing per se (of cause it depends on the country you live in). To be able to work efficiently, every developed society needs some information about its people. For those having a problem with that, I suggest moving to a place without civilization.
