I testet LineageOS 16 before I wanted to install Sailfish X. Has anyone already done an installation of Sailfish X over LineageOS 16 (Android 9)? Does the document in https://jolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360008004900-Downgrading-Android-from-9-to-8-1-on-XA2-This-makes-it-possible-to-install-Sailfish-OS- works with LineageOS as well?

This is an interesting question for me. We have three Xperia devices in use (two already with Sailfish). I would also like to test the new Xperia Xa2 with LineageOS and then probably switch back to Sailfish if Sailfish works a little more reliably. At the moment, Sailfish 3.1 is still a bit annoying if you have to use it daily. The new Xa2 is here next to me and waiting for an installation. I'm a little bit unsure if I'm flashing directly Sailfish or if I should try it with LineageOS first.

Regardless of these considerations, downgrading should work if LineageOS 16 was previously installed.

my xa2 ultra boots lineage 16 but is unusable because of the bluetooth app crashing constantly and repeatedly. (crashes like every second)

@jam: Thanks for this note. It proves: Even other operating systems have their bugs!

I did yesterday on my xperia xa2 ultra.

I've switched between the 2 OS a few times now without downgrading first.

I did at first install sailfish over the original sony android 8, maybe that makes a difference.

I can confirm the sequence on XA2 ,SFOS over andy 8, then LIN16 as main OS nowadays. All is working as it should and that's definitely not the case with SF!

@jam: A question for understanding: You installed LineageOS 16 and switched then to SFOS? Did you use the above description "Downgrading Android from 9 to 8.1"?

seehas ( 2019-10-01 22:31:21 +0300 )edit

@seehas: no, I switch between LineageOS 16 and SFOS directly and vice versa, without any downgrading. Just boot TWRP for sideload installing Lineage or flash SFOS using the flash.sh from Sailfish_OS-Jolla-3.1.0.11.

Not that downgrading is much of a problem using Emma (Sony tool). (Although you need to boot to windows for that.)

To verify some things I went back to an official Sony ROM once using Emma. After tests, I again installed SFOS.

I first installed LineageOS 16 on my Xperia XA2 Ultra and later SailfishOS. With regard to SailfishOS I was following the installation instructions referring to Linux. I didn't do any downgrading from LineageOS 16 to Android 8.

The installation worked seamlessly without any problems.

Does that mean you have now LineageOS running 'inside' or did SailfishOS install Android8 (over LineageOS)?

Thanks, I will try too.

seehas ( 2019-10-02 12:09:06 +0300 )edit

@danfin : it means that i bought the xa2 ultra with android 8, i let it update to android 9, then i installed lineage os instead of the android 9 and afterwards i installed sailfish os instead of the the lineage os.

I did the same. I got the XA2 and firstly installed LineageOS on it. That had issues with connections to be made (no wireless, no network, no bluetooth). I then installed SF over LineageOS and that worked. I went back to LineageOS to get it working properly. What worked for me here was to reboot an extra time before you actually install the LineageOS to the device. That way apparently some process gets completed. Going back to SF I just had to follow the installation instructions.

(All done under Linux).

I would like to express my gratitude for thess informations. This makes a change from one system to the other much easier, since a downgrade is obviously not required. Has anyone tried this under Windows?

@sailaway: I tried it under Windows. On my Xperia XA2 I had installed LineagoOS 16. By means of the installation instruction https://jolla.com/sailfishx-windows-instructions-xa2/ and the downgrade manual https://jolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/article_attachments/360003683140/How_to_revert_XA2_from_Android_9_to_8.1_and_then_install_Sailfish_OS.pdf it works fine and without any issues. Now I'm happy to be back at Sailfish, which works better than LineageOS.

@seehas: Thank you for this information. Especially for the information that Sailfish OS works better than LineageOS. I've been using an Xperia Xa2 with Sailfish for some time, but I'm not completely satisfied with some features. For example, no sound notification on WhatsApp messages (sadly, all friends and family use this messenger). Playing back received videos only works in a roundabout way. Adding contacts is also not easily possible. The data counter does not work. Also other bugs disturb me with the daily use. My wife uses an Xperia X with Sailfish. Another Xa 2 (brand new) for our son is waiting for the installation of Sailfish. I would like to support Jolla with the purchase of another license, but the device must work in everyday life. That's why I'm considering whether to test Lineage OS or wait for the next Sailfish update (It's time that some bugs are fixed) to reevaluate the situation. Thankful greetings!

Some features which didn't work under LineageOS 16 were the display orientation (landscape/portrait) and the sensor to dim the display. Also the proximity sensor didn't work satisfactorily. Probably the same issue that appeared in older Sailfish versions too. All these features does now work with sailfish. Also the fingerprint sensor is more precise. On LineageOS not every touch does unlock the phone. As I don't use WhatsApp I don't know if the notification does work. So it depends on your preferences.

@seehas: Again my thanks for this additional information. I think I will stay with Sailfish and hope that some of the bugs will be fixed with the next release. Then I will probably also flash the next device with sailfish. I know it's hard to maintain an operating system and I'm grateful that there is a company like Jolla as a rare alternative.
