Jolla, what is wrong with you? [not a question]

I have recently updated by Sailfish X to 3.2.0.12 and I have to admit that I really detest the changes made in the UI. The "X" button when deleting e.g. message or contact history simply looks ugly, so does the conversation view after changes in the previous update. If you really want to look like Android, why do you continue to develop own OS? On the other hand, if you are somehow enforced to implement such changes, provide the patches to look like Sailfish 1, which was the most beautiful OS I've ever seen.

Nonetheless, I am very satisfied, that at least after the update the mobile connection finally works as it should. Maybe if you focused on several issues and stop wasting time on damaging the UI, it would be solved much faster.

True words. Updates should generally be more frequent and Jolla should focus on a few important issues each update. Backend should outrank UI. UI is secondary.

Unfortunately this is Jolla's problem for couple of years now. All competent designers already left the company (or were fired during financial troubles?) and it is visible in every "new" release. There seems to be no innovation, just copying others...

I think Jolla wants to ease ux adaption for android users with this step. There should be a setting where the user could choose between sexy 'pure minimalistic jolla gesture control' and 'ugly android like button based control' 😆 ... but this would mean a hell lot of work, just fantasizing...

I just add some of @Ancelad's patches to get the classic unlike look back and feature wise 3.2.0.12 is a step forward. Would be great if they integrated some UI design features into their ambiences so this concept would make some more sense.

I like the conversations view (you mean the Messages app, right?), but that X on Remorse Items is just totally out of place. It's not a desktop application! Add some hint to indicate it's swipeable (is that a word?)

But other than that I think it's an amazing release. Very smooth.

Wojtek, what is wrong with you?

I have recently read your post and kind of dislike it for no special reason. But I just wanted to make my point and waste your time. Come on! You do not like the design of... a button.

It's not really about the button, it's about changes which does not make sense, when certain improvements are very important and need to be made.

@Wojtek: you don't know what makes sense and what not. The real customers of Jolla are organizations and they know what they want. Sorry but you (we) are irrelevant atm. Be a bit more realistic...

Come on! @wojtek14 the GUI design is the only one aspect of a system?
What is about the "under the hood". That's the most important.
Right design too... but behind the main philosophy of privacy, privat sphere and Software fragmentation, and obsolescence...

Design is for you as main prio before privacy, fragmentation and obsolence (and i don't know what)?...
then i'll invite you to get an apple device (otherwise apple is not so good for obsolescence point of view , but better than google)...

I find the contact view interesting, practicable. but according to you, with a long habit with the old design we need a lots of time to accommodate ourself.

I give you right that they may spend less time on polishing the gui, to better concentrate on more important things. here could it be communicated more constructive, instead of pointing on any "damages".

I wished more that you give a list on what it is for you more important.
For example (for me) better bluetooth support for android app, improvement of media controls per bluetooth for other native apps. better wifi support for android app. Review of the calendar app, with more reminders, better overview of merely calendars (display more color per events). Better photo with improved night-view. etc...

Stay cool and hold the line sailor

Have a nice continuation. Cheers

I agree with you that GUI is not important and that's why I do not want any changes in it. I want a smooth, stable and non-spying OS, which I can recommend to my friends and have arguments for non-IT people to spend 50 EUR on it. I want to have fixed proximity sensor (still I sometimes find problems on XA2), no hangs during wakeup from standby, instant GPS localization etc. Unless it's stable, I cannot see any brighter future for it.

Design is what makes SFOS stand out against Android and iOS. It's how a potential new user judges the OS. If the design deteriorates into an ugly android version all kinds of privacy, security, encryption multitasking etc. won't matter a thing.

The answer to that question is:

nothing.

but this discussion made my day :D

for me, this button is more convenient than text. nothing to translate, everyone knows what such a X means... for me it's good. there are some aspects in the UX theyre more bad, inconvenient or ugly than the X

Please take a look at my comment above to better understand my point. It's still not about button itself, I would like to have easily adjustable night mode or a modern web browser, but I get lots of buttons and useless changes.

@Dreej but this OS doesn't need X buttons, you can close everything by tapping or swipping.

atlochowski ( 2019-11-08 15:52:28 +0300 )edit

@altochowski I agree. and yes, but tap to cancel was always a button (or an area on the screen) even it didn't look like a button before. and it also was like this since v.1. I also talked about the UX in general. coz on a gesture based system the timer should be swiped to the left or right. like " <- swipe to cancel -> " that would be an improvement.

Dreej ( 2019-11-11 16:11:44 +0300 )edit

@Dreej but for me it's looks like Jolla is adding buttons and when they finish it they will remove swipes and tell us "you don't need swipes anymore, you have buttons like in other OSes".

A modern webbrowser like android? A nightmode like android? But no X - Button like android. I understand!

It's not like there are no features, which should be copied, but there are of various priority. Moreover, modern web browser is not a feature of only Android as far as I know...

my first mail to jolla support whas a bit in the style of the topic; because the browser was not capable to solve the captcha from the jolla feedback formular. after the huawei ban i apologized and thanked jolla for their great work. i think it should be possible to change the ui as you wish, as it is open source. there you can waste your time and practice your religion until the sun goes down for you
