Dear Sailors,

like Jolla dismissed Android 8 for Xperia X, but there already is Android 8 for similar phones (Xperia XA2) with similar hardware, how hard could it be to adapt a Sailfish OS port for XA2 to Xperia X? I know that there already was a proof of concept, so it should be doable, but its it is still a bit of work to do. But there was also a SFOS user who by himself brought SFOS to Xperia X Compact, so this way should work too, and as soon as the hardest part would have been done, i am sure Jolla would officially support it, as this could then improve the Sailfish experience for a broad user base with a minimal manpower and investment. Then i also think the reflash of the devices would be no problem, if it would be officially supported. I understood that for Android update, the kernel also would have to be updated, but as there is a newer kernel as well as Android version for Xperia this all should be doable by a community effort. If we have to do a crowdfunding for it, i would also be ready to pay 20 € for that. What do you other Xperia X and Sailfish OS users think about this? Please share your opinion :)

Why again and again the same topic? https://together.jolla.com/question/217178/baseport-8-for-x-if-its-only-about-flashing/ SaimenSays (13 hours ago)

Because the actually post, is not an answer and no excuse for not upgrading our devices, as there is a new Linux-Kernel and newer Android-version for our device, which by the hardware, sometimes is even better then the new flagships. My comment doesn't go to Jolla but to the community and to try to get somebody working on a newer baseport for our Xperia X. Like i said, i would even pay money for that. And for Jolla, if somebody lays you the ready bits of something to your feet, what would be the act, to officially support them or in some kind of way support them with stuff, coding force and so on. What i don't understand is, why a company wants to let die a phone, that represents the biggest part of its user base. Its like kamikaze. And the argument of Jolla was always, saving of hardware, no need to buy another phone, so wether they left this path, or it was a big lie...

I would chip-in some (small) money for community members to make polish the current attempts of Baseport 8 (or 9?) on Xperia X.

If enough people join, that would be doable.

@DrYak i am the same opinion then you. Can you please post a site or blog with the porting attemps, i searched for it but just found mentions, but not a concrete project. Probably if more users knew about this projects they would gain more momentum and support. Thanks!

Awesome @vknecht,i think you made many people a merry Christmas with that news. I would help you if i could program, but unfortunately i can't. But hopefully you will find others joining you coding, or at least helping you testing @DrYak. As i said, i would be even ready to pay for the update, if this helps or would be a motivation for you. A new device will cost hundreds of Euros, what are 20-30 € for an update of some good hardware :)

Keep up the good work! Merry Christmas @vknecht. Please keep us updated and if you need testers, don't hesitate to ask us :)

Why base it on kernel 4.9 and not 4.4? Do you have a link for the build?

@Louis It's kernel 4.9 because that's what supported by aosp9/Pie base (see kernel support at SODP). It's more recent, needs less backport work, etc. It's not good enough and configs aren't ready yet for easy/clean build using OBS.

I lost my hope and buy XA2, but my X is still in my car. If it's possible i don't have problem to buy new license if Android 8/9 will arrive on X.
