How do I start an XMPP chat? [answered]

asked 2019-12-06 19:49:55 +0300

Hi, I'm trying to message somebody on xmpp, but when I enter their xmpp address in the recipient box, it just tries to send a sms instead. Is there a secret button I need to press, or have I just setup my xmpp account weirdly? thanks.

Under the text edit, where it says SMS, try to tap that. At least that's how it worked some years ago.

doesn't look like that works anymore :(

It still works but very limited. :/ (no encryption, no multiple accounts) With a set up account let someone send You an unencrypted message and it will appear in Messages. Senders XMPP adress is now listet (including status) in People. Link this contact to an existing one with pohne numbers and senders address will be shown as nickname. In Messages select New Message, add a contact from People and select the listet account name instead a phone number. To continue an previous (SMS) conversation via XMPP tap to the downpointing arrow before typing any message text to select the account (assigned in People) instead of the phone number. The XMPP adress of a contact shows its state or disappers here if internet access is not availiable.

Short answer: With Conversations (from F-Droid or Google Play Store), if you have AlienDalvik ("Android app support") installed.

Long answer: XMPP is unfinished work in SailfishOS (i.e., its integrated XMPP functionality).
Progress has stalled for years. The best working native app is Schmooze, which is very, very basic and its development also seems to have stalled.
