How to used sharing ride services (Didi, Ola,Lyft, Uber) WITHOUT installing Google Play or Google Services? Please share your successful experience & howto's even if you're using mobile website not an app.

Update: (on XA2 Nuuksio, installing via Aurora store)

  • Ola 5.0.5 - Installs, but after msg "won't run without Google services" crashes into tray
  • DiDi 7.1.72- Installs, but msg "won't run without Google services" then stays on logo screen
  • Uber Lite 1.81.1 - installs, but stuck on Android settings allowing location
  • Uber 4.293.1 - installs, opens, able to register (no rides yet)

Lyft has a mobile site which you can add it to your app drawer so it looks like an app and when you click it you can just order a Lyft from ride.lyft.com

What browser you use and does the GPS location work this way?

Tinybit ( 2020-01-03 18:56:43 +0300 )edit

Just tested it out and it looked like GPS found my location with a map. I've tried to do Uber through a browser, and the map wouldn't appear. Will know more once I try to order my first ride.

Hi Tinybit,

I've recently used Uber when staying in the US for a while. I have a XA2 and used the regular Uber App installed by means of the Aurora Store. It worked, but what bothered me was that the GPS signal could not be forwarded to the app, so I always had to enter the address. Furthermore, I had to save the address within "settings -> my saved locations" to be able to use them. The message that Google-Play-Services are required for this app can be ignored. When it comes to the payment, I sometimes had to switch back and forth to the point before to be able to progress. Maybe some of the issues are fixed meanwhile, cause there were two updates since then (used 3.1 Seitseminen at that time) So in summary, it works, but it's not as convenient as it should/could be ;)

You don't need to use Google Services to use apps that require Google Services - there is MicroG, an open source reimplementation. All my Android apps work flawlessly with it, only apps that use Google for payment or paid apps that use verification don't work. Installing is extremely easy, shown for example here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K05m3EJJ9A. I additionally recommend those steps which should ensure maximum compatibility (not necessary):

  • installing FakeStore (apps will think the Play Store exists);
  • allowing spoofing in Sailfish's Android support settings;
  • in settings go into App/MicroG/Open Android settings, press back button, Apps/Permissions/enable system package replacement and enable it for both MicroG and FakeStore;
  • if you want more accurate location you might want to look into NLP; After all that and a restart all the boxes in MicroG's Self-check should be checked.

After that you will need to reinstall most your Android apps, as they will stop working.

Good luck and smooth sailing!

In theory yes, that's what I use too (I'm the one who wrote the overly long howto).

In practice: the current latest version of Uber app crashes on the current microG and Uber Lite isn't available in all location. Hence the question: which are actually working in practice?

(Regarding Uber: that's weird older versions used to work nicely without any services or with microG only...)

Same experience here, awesome theory solution, in practice new Uber app 4.293 still demands Google Play Services (Uber re-installed after MicroG) :-(

at least, given how widespread Uber is, the microG devs might have an incentive at fixing the problem: an issue is already open.

Uber have a mobile website (m.uber.com) which works perfectly for me when using Firefox (I haven't tried the native browser).

However (at least when I signed up) you had to open a support request to get access to the mobile website version or else it would "fail" (which was actually just it saying "you're not signed up for the mobile website" but was displayed as "incorrect login").

a long time ago, the mobile version worked with the native app. I wanted to try if it is still the case, but got the same error as you.
