How to stop background data connections when screen is off?

Is it possible somehow (patch/terminal command/etc) to have cellular data / wifi turned OFF when screen is off? I would love to have this function, i only need updates when i unlock my phone.
I have a sensitive sound system so i can hear all the data transfers going on making a certain beeping sound (not the same sound as the regular cell tower communication)
