Please integrate wi-fi positioning support to Sailfish and Alien Dalvik location acquisition systems. Some possible data sources for wi-fi positioning:

  • OpenCellID
  • OpenBmap
  • OMA SUPL (licensing issues with supl.google.com / supl.nokia.com?)

how does AGPS relate to this?

A-GPS needs satellites (in assisted mode cell towers can be used to get a fix quicker) whereas wi-fi positioning is independent to GPS availability. Wi-Fi positioning might be used as an additional assistance for A-GPS, I guess.

I'll just note that all Wifi positioning solutions I've seen so far (mainly the one used by Firefox & Chrome for HTML 5 location handling) leak quite a lot of potentially sensitive data to a third party service, namely:

  • list of all WiFi AP ESSIDs, MAC addresses and signal strengths

And provided your position is found using this:

  • your current location with building-level accuracy

Other than the privacy ramifications, WiFi location seems to work pretty well in a dense enough urban setting. But there should be an option to disable it, due to the above mentioned privacy concerns.

i'd like a mechanism that respects privacy . Why not keeping the database in phone memory storage? This will at least improve location acquisition in frequent places where i am.

Wifi positioning is already supported. It uses the HERE service.

But HERE phones home and needs (mobile) data connection. openBmap would allow offline mode.

Please allow using offline data (wlan/cell almanachs) and complete disabling of HERE online data collection.
