[Official announcement] L10n strings for 3.3.0

Hello again dear language fellows!

We are now ready for a translation round 3.3.0 release.

This translation round has close to 120 strings to be translated depending on the language. We would kindly ask you to do your part by the end of Thursday, February 27th . If you have any concerns, problems, or questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

A kind reminder, always use English UK as the source for your translations, not Engineering English. There are still languages doing it the wrong way. Also, please try to check old terms used to keep consistency. The same goes for language style (e.g. how to address the user, https://sailfishos.org/wiki/Translate_the_OS#Tone_of_voice) and old translations. Also please check if there is a comment on a string to keep the translation short or some other guidance.

Without further ado, head to https://translate.sailfishos.org and follow link for instructions if you're there for the first time :)

Thank you & regards,

Sim & Jarkko

Thank you all thus far!

@ljo, if left empty it takes the default order (<subtype> <type>, e.g. "Personal • Mobile"). Should it be the other way around for Swedish: "Mobil • Personlig" ?

For strings like 'Add a route' or 'Add another route', there should be a comment saying whether it's a suggestion to the user (e.g. a placeholder on an empty page), a menu item, a page header, the name of an option, etc. All of them can be translated differently and a translation for one context would be nonsensical in another.

There's also a string in sailfish_transferengine.ts called 'Scale image', which has as its comment 'Image scale'. Is it the verb or the noun?

Also thanks to ahappyhuman for doing most of the Dutch translation work already.

(I still really dislike 'Tap to undo', not just the way it's unintuitive but also the translations it requires. In Dutch, the shortest, not even grammatically correct way to say that is 'Tik om ongedaan te maken', which is simply far too long for a message that has to fit in a limited amount of a space and has to convey its information as quickly as possible. I'll keep on translating these strings as if they said 'Tap to cancel'.)

Edit: there's also a bug where Pootle claims there's an untranslated string, but when you click on it to finish the translation, there's nothing there, see https://translate.sailfishos.org/nl/sailfish-components-gallery-qt5/

Other translations also still suffer from the "all strings are marked as translated but the translation's completion percentage stays at 99%" problem.

As for the "Tap to undo", unsurprisingly the same issue persists in the German language.

Thank you. Content instructions have been added for 'Add a/another route'.

'Scale' is a verb in 'Scale image' (can be found in ⩽3.2.1 when sharing an image to e.g. Twitter). But can be noun if fits a language better (instructions added).

Remorse timer in 3.3.0 has been through another iteration after community's feedback, however 'Tap to undo' is still there and the short wording for that can indeed be problematic for some languages.

'Tap to cancel' would be the most appropriate if the next line said "Deleting %n items". In most cases the next line says "%n items deleted", where 'undo' fits better.

Current inconsistency of Deleting and Deleted both still being present in the UI should get fix in a release after 3.3.0 (most likely Deleted will be kept, and all Deleting will be removed, still TBD).

Apologies, the 99% Pootle bug has been known to occur at random, e.g. now the aforementioned link is showing 100%.

Thanks @sledges, it's always nice to know you're reading our feedback! I'm just using the 'Tap to cancel' translation because 'Tap to undo' is significantly longer, and, at least in my language, it doesn't sound completely illogical to 'cancel' an action that's already been done. 'Annuleren' has a slight undertone of reverting back to the original state. Like the English verb 'annul', basically, though come to think of it, in English you can also 'cancel' a contract, which undoes/reverts the agreement you'd made. Perhaps this could be a general suggestion for other translators whose language doesn't have an easy 1-to-1 translation of 'Tap to undo'.

Hello again!

Thank you for your great work so far!

There are 2 new strings added for this round:

Settings-accounts: components_accounts-la-sign_in_to_refresh_credentials "Sign in to refresh credentials"

Sailfish-components-accounts: component_accounts-la-not_signed_in2 "Account not sign in to"

Thanks,

Jarkko (jahonen)

"Account not sign in to": this is not grammatically correct English. Do you mean "Not signed in to account"?

@jahonen: have an Idea to change strings "Pull down to save some timers" and "Pull down to save some alarms" to "Pull down to create some timers" and "Pull down to create some alarms".

I think it's more creating than just saving.

I think 'set some timers' and 'set some alarms' would be even better, but either way I agree that 'save some timers/alarms' doesn't sound right.

nthn ( 2020-03-03 01:30:59 +0300 )edit

Possibly I'm out of the context, but what is meant by SOME timers? Some unspecified anf unpredictable set of timers?

kandelabra ( 2020-03-03 09:40:44 +0300 )edit

@kandelabra: it just means "a couple of timers, at least one", but in this context it doesn't really mean anything by itself, it's just a word you add to make the suggestion sound more natural. For example, "pull down to set timers" sounds robotic, "pull down to set some timers" sounds natural and friendly. It's possible that there's no such grammatical quirk in your language.

nthn ( 2020-03-03 12:57:52 +0300 )edit

@nthn One really can create couple of timers with one pull? In UI clarity is more important than tone of voice I believe. Most clear wording will be like that:

Pull down to create/set new timer

kandelabra ( 2020-03-03 13:30:01 +0300 )edit
1

@kandelabra: no, that wouldn't work because the sentences in question are suggestions to the user. It's saying "Hey, now that you're here, why not set some timers? You can add them by pulling down." The UI is perfectly clear to any native English speaker. Your suggestion adds nothing, but only detracts.

@jahonen: In tutorial it should be "Pull down slowly without lifting your finger and select New alarm" instead of "Pull down slowly without lifting your finger and select New timer"
