[3.3.0.14] Device Hangs at Entering Security Code after Enabling Encryption [answered]

Hi all,

I successfully updated my Xperia XA2 Plus Dual SIM to 3.3.0.14, After creating a Backup of my /home I proceeded to enable the device encryption as described in the ZenDesk article. Encryption processed for a while, then the device rebooted, showed the License agreement and tried to encrypt again, which then failed. This repeated over and over (License -> tries encryption -> fails). After several attempts I shut down the device.

On the next boot I got the normal Bootloader Warning -> Sony Logo -> Enter Security Code. After entering the correct code the busy spinner appears instead of the ** and nothing else happens. Leaving the device like this vor 15-20 minutes does absolutely nothing, it just stays there with the spinner spinning.

So I booted into recovery mode, and had a look. The LV for home is correctly encrypted, and can be decrypted using the security code. I can also mount the LUKS-Volume just fine. As my data where partly wiped during encryption, I copied my Backup of /home back from the SD-Card. everything else seems to be OK, fsck shows everything clean etc..

Despite everything seemingly ok in Recovery Mode, the device does not boot. it only gets until Entering the security code, and thats it (as described above). Does anyone have an Idea what I can do to get the device booting again (without reflash)?

I was experiencing same thing, encryption failed on XA2 Dual Sim. But after I removed "Aliendalvik Control" and tried again it worked. Didn't shut down/reboot the phone as I saw that it might not boot anymore...

I don't have aliendalvik control installed on my device, so it seems there are other things that can cause this behaviour.

I was able to recover my device by reformating the home-lv to ext4 and copying my backup again, effectively disabling encryption. After adding the /home to /etc/fstab my XA2 boots again and seems to work fine. Settings->Encryption is back to unencrypted state, and I can start the Encryption again. I tried the encryption again afterwards, with the same result as above.

Question for the Jolla-folks: are there any logs / debug settings or similar that could give an insight into what is happening here? I would really like to use the encryption, but would like to avoid reflashing the phone if possible

One thing i did "hack" on my phone is, I resized the home and root volumes (making home smaller and root bigger), I don't expect this to break the encryption like this, but you never know..

I think I found the culprit. After I stumbled over https://together.jolla.com/question/217403/defender-app-stops-xperia-10-from-booting/ I retried to enable the Encryption after unistalling harbour-defender, which I had installed.

This time, without harbour-defender installed, enabling encryption worked without a problem, After restoring my backup again I have a encrypted and working XA2 running Sailfish OS 3.3.0.14

It seems the suspection that harbour-defender in some way interferes with the encryption is true.
