How do updates/upgrades work?

I run SailfishOS 3.2.1.20 (free version) on an Xperia XA2 Dual SIM.

I see SailfishOS as a true GNU/Linux distribution with a package manager.
As such I would expect to regularly run a command to bring all packages up-to-date, such as zypper ref; zypper up or apt update; apt upgrade

Is this recommendable or even possible?

There seems to be a new Sailfish version out, but I see nothing new when I issue zypper list-updates.
I also don't see anything in the OS Updates dialog.
Are system updates something I get only with the paid version?

Will I keep all my configurations (even command line hacks) after an update?

Thank you in advance.

JFYI: A new SFOS version is only "out" when announced for example here https://blog.jolla.com/ but you are right there is one coming :-)

SFOS does not work that way; you cannot update the OS packet-by-packet, you need to go from a complete release to a complete release.

There are 2 ways to do that, either using the GUI update tool or using the ssu command from terminal, for example "ssu re 3.3.0.14 ; pkcon refresh"

For using commands please read this guide

But in conclusion the commands are su re 3.3.0.14; version --dup

If after successful Apps are not install able you should run pkcon refresh

Thanks for the clarification.

I think all my questions from this question have been answered - either here or through recent post in both forums.

We warmly recommend forgetting the CLI and using the Sailfish user-interface at Settings > Sailfish OS updates. When an update appears here, you will know for sure that it is ready to be taken and installed.

In 3.2, the updates never appeared. I believe this is because it is not paid version. Please make this clear, as it wastes a lot of time waiting for updates that will never happen. [BTW, why won't you sell outside EU even after 7 years!]

@bongo: There are the following reasons for updates not appearing in the GUI of a Sailfish OS device:

  1. (the obvious) there is no update yet for this device
  2. you are not registered to getting early access updates - wait 1-2 weeks for the rollout to all users
  3. your device has a free Sailfish X version (i.e., there is no licence)
  4. there is something wrong in the setup of the device.

How would you know?

1. The device should indicate an available update. The device owner can also see it from Jolla Blog and from the release notes.
2. If you want, feel free to sign in to your Jolla account and subscribe to early access releases. But this is not a solution, really.
3. We tell at the table of https://jolla.com/sailfishx/ that the free version won't get any updates
4. This help article and the linked articles may provide help. In general, we recommend avoiding the command line unless one knows exactly what it implies. Also, installing apps from 3rd parties may lead to problems.

1) You need to clearly state HERE, and in the ANNOUNCEMENT, that free versions don't get updates, not in a disused basement lavatory behind a sign saying beware of the tiger. I know this now - @3.2 I wasted time on it.

2) WHY THE HELL DON'T YOU SELL LICENSES!! (outside EU)

3) Since you have decided not to sell licenses, why try to encourage people to buy it by disabling features, when they can't buy it?

Thank You.

I can now see the clearly missing checkmark under "Sailfish OS updates as long as device is supported" in this chart. Not sure why I missed that information earlier (though I want to take this opportunity to say that I find SailfishOS information/documentation rather scattered, and the discourse forum format can, IMO, not replace a proper wiki).

I have also meanwhile realised that this is (still) an early access update.

FWIW, after using this OS for a while I think it's well worth getting the full version.

I believe you need the paid licence to get the updates or at least the chart suggests that when you see what kind of features you have for each type of device. I purchased the licence over the weekend but still don't have the update available on my XA2 single sim. It says you can wait up to a week to get the update.

@pepe999

The current release is known as EA (early access). EA is configured from your Jolla account. If you haven't selected early access from your account, you will have to wait for the public release of the latest OS (3.3.0), hence you may be waiting a week (or more) for the public release.

Thanks for the reply, I have done the EA in the account now. How about the updates? Is it available only for the paid version or the free one as well?

pepe999 ( 2020-04-06 12:10:30 +0300 )edit

Hmm, good point, I'm not totally sure @pepe999 - perhaps to wait for someone else to chime in with that info. I'm still using the original Jolla device launched 6 years ago so i can't say for sure.

Thank you, this is the only answer that clearly states that there's no OS upgrades for the free version, be it EA or not.
