I think it would be useful to exclude specific folders from the gallery view. Android allows this by putting an emtpy ".nomedia" file to the specific folders. Something of similar function may be useful.

putting a .nomedia (or backup.metadata) file in the folder should work.

I agree, when adding music to the phone (built in memory or the sd card) it pulls loads of thumbnails into Gallery, which then have to be deleted. The Gallery needs sub folders so we can choose what goes where and what is displayed
