I've been following all the voting in general for a longer while, and actually made a small study out of it.

The result was, that as a content edit (even an empty one, nothing edited) lifts a question up to the default front page, those questions edited several times tend to gather more votes. Also, adding a new answer or editing content of any answer lift the question baqck to the top. These features, IMO, pulls the floor off from counting the votes for finding out the real importance of issues.

As an example:

The one above got the roadmap tag, one below didn't. These examples are not my own questions, I selected them to describe the result I got from the whole stydy. I wrote a couple of answers here how this could be avoided in the future, but I don't know if they are possible or not. Please add an answer if you come up with another idea.

ps. I'm not going to lift-up this :) However, each added answer does.

Jolla should also take into account the votes/view ratio when deciding what questions will get prioritized. It is maybe even more important as the number of votes.

I can't really decide if this is a problem or not. On the one hand, an edit may change the question in an essential way so that people may want to take another look at it. On the other hand, an empty edit just to bump up a question is not desirable.

@Neo Using the votes/view ratio isn't necessarily a good idea... Commented questions gather a lot of views, lowering the ratio. Also, the ratio could be lowered in purpose with just opening the question several times.

@simo I thought that one question gets one view per user, no matter how many times that user views the same question. This is why I favoured this ratio. If this is not the case, then you are absolutely right.

@jsiren I agree - but e.g. just changing the default front page doesn't prevent using "Sort by Activity" to get another look you mentioned. Currently, now that the activity page is the front page, ppl seems to vote mostly on those questions.

Way to avoid: Changing the default fron page to not show the most active questions. I suggest to set it to show questions by date.

Perhaps setting activity unchanged after content edits that result in no actual change? i.e. edits done purely to bump up the question?

@jsiren Exactly. "Activity" = timestamp when the question was last touched. If edit-touch could be made "invisible", it would help a lot. I don't know if this is possible, but it could be - currently retagging a question is an "invisble" touch which doesn't affect to the activity timestamp, but still all the retaggings has one.

if marked as minor edit it should not bump it, what it actually does now - it even sends notifications sometimes...

Fixing typos or doing minor modifications always bumbs up the question to the top which is indeed very annoying. There should be an option to select if you want to put question to the top alongside with minor edit option that should prevent notifications.

Check how the help page might work as the default front page. Current content there can be seen great as a landing page, and natural options to advance from there are:

  • All (first option, easy to advance to latest activity page which is now the default)
  • Unanswered (would probably become another popular category if "All" wasn't automatic like now)
  • Followed (might be used a bit more, and also add the use of "Follow" button in questions)
  • Search box (most important, and would probably be much more used. Ppl might find to use the portal like they use google or other similar searc engines)

Help content would be even more read, reducing the amount of duplicates in overall. Text could be impoved by adding links to the content of each current "Featured Tag". (We wouldn't see the Tag panel on the right with this solution, but in my opinion the benefits are great compared to this small miss.)

Maybe just changing the default start page would actually change the user behavior in such way that this issue becomes smaller in a natural way.

Maybe adding the tag boxes to that page to have another natural way in.

OT, with current use, I don't understand the "Unanswered" category. How is that supposed to work?
