Call me all you want, but I want to go through all open questions to share my opinions and votes. The number of questions is quite intimidating, though. Please add an option to show open question only. Maybe even make it default behaviour?

Edit: As a workaround, top menu UNANSWERED now shows only questions which are open & have no accepted answers. (Thanks to @eric )

I see this one as very important. Think about close future: 10 000 questions of which about 9000 are closed, but they are still along in every search result (except for "Unanswered, which unfortunately also filters all open questions with an answer). Please vote up.

I might have found a new workaround. Check my latest answer :)

A duplicate was closed today. It would be very convenient to have a new 'Open' scope.

Closed questions (and tag-system)

I support @Neo's suggestion that the easiest way to filter out closed questions from the lists would be simply to add to the top-level menu of Together an 'Open' tab alongside All, Unanswered and Followed that would show only questions that have not been closed.

Edit: In the upstream Askbot discussions the suggestion is to filter out those questions that have been closed as "duplicates","irrelevant" or "spam" as showing up in the question list, and it would be optimal if the added "Open" tab would in Together filter out questions using such (or similar) criteria.

In regads to using tags-system to this (as has been suggested elsewhere), here is a more more general comment abt it; please don't over-do it ;) Tags have their uses and benefits but they shouldn't be used as solutions to all possible needs to categorize questions here. Other means should be used for such top-level groupings of questions.

Besides, tagging closed questions with the same or similar tags that is selected from list using the 'Close'-button would mean that the already existing info about Closing will be duplicated. This requires then that the user-faced tags and backend-side reason-data should be kept in sync somehow. So, let's not replicate in tags info that is already in system, but rather provide users ways to browse and search questions using also backend-data and categories (if such are possible in Askbot).

It would also be nice to hear what is @eric's opinion on the capabilities of Askkbot/Together-platform to provide top-level categorizations and groupings of content here outside the tag-system.

I agree that the proper solution to this would be to add filtering option based on the closed status.

This question has been also asked from the upstream Askbot

@jjaone I really hope this feature could be developed. After that, this idea is a way better than using tag panel for this (like suggested in another answer). +1. However, meanwhile my "tag answer" is maybe the only workaround to answer this question, so it shouldn't be downgraded in your answer.

In Askbot settings, change "'What should "unanswered question" mean? to "Question has no accepted answers"

After this, selecting Unanswered from top menu should filter questions which are closed & questions which have an accepted answer --> showing all open questions which have no accepted answers

Edit: This solution was taken into use as a workaround. Please vote only, if you see this as a better permanent solution compared to other given answers.

What are the other meanings for 'unanswered' questions there? I thought that is what they have been all along..And doesn't that option also show unanswered questions that have been closed?

foss4ever ( 2014-02-05 14:42:47 +0300 )edit

@jjaone The current setting is "Question has no answers". To your last question: check the current result ;)

@simo, @jjaone: I modified the setting to "Question has no accepted answer". Does it help?

Edit: There is a better answer (which I voted myself too), but while that solution is not yet possible, this answer can be taken as a workaround:

Way to achieve that requires some work, but it's possible now with the extended tag panel. For this, we would need:

  • to tag closed questions with a tag describing the reason for closing:
    • duplicate, off-topic, fixed, outdated
  • to add all or some of these tags to your personal list of ignored tags (panel on the right)
  • to select view option "exclude ignored tags"

As said, this takes some work, and unfortunately there's no way to search for only closed questions to make this any easier.

This answer is edited after a comment from @Neo (I agree with it, earlier this answer presented a "closed" tag.)

I actually could volunteer to tag the old questions accordingly. It will make the difference for future.

Thanks :) But before that we need some moderators behind the idea. They manage the back-end lists. cc: @eric

I don't think tagging closed questions with a tag closed would be a good idea. There would always be questions closed and not tagged proprely. Would be much better to add one more sorting option (open/closed questions).

Neo ( 2014-02-02 00:03:35 +0300 )edit

spam can be deleted, please add fixed to the list, I updated several items with fixed and duplicate now - not sure if answer-accepted is really needed as some answers are plain wrong but accepted (yes I found one...)

chemist ( 2014-02-04 14:13:24 +0300 )edit

@chemist edited by your suggestion, thanks. If there will be questions closed for any other reasons, there could be one more common "ignore" tag like closed-for-other-reasons or something like that, just shorter. (at this point, a tag like this is not needed)
