Since the care people are busy i'll ask it here. Right now the only way -or at least the one i found- to replace the default icons is to replace them manually which is fine for the "hacky" type of user but not fine at all for everyone else.

So. Is there a way of packaging an icon theme that can replace the default -and maybe more- icons that will work like this:

The user downloads the package (preferably from harbor) >> Installs it >> Uses the theme >>If he uninstall it returns to the default theme without messing anything.

And just to tease a bit -it it ever gets a release- it will look somehow like this: image description

Packing a theme with RPM should be quite straightforward. The problem here is adding a theme picker and integrating it with the rest of the system. I would like to have the icon theme as one of the properties for ambiences. That would add some some amazing capabilities to new Other Halves as well.

I don't need a theme picker (period). Installing it and using it and uninstalling it and going back to default would be more than enough.

Great idea! However it could be integrated, it would be a great feature and customization is as important as other secondary features. It's one reason (beyond other reasons) I don't like Windows Phone for example. Moreover I really like your icons job!

Only one rpm package, numix icons found from openrepos, any more anywhere?

ropelius ( 2015-12-16 10:50:21 +0300 )edit

@ropelius

No AFAIK. And the source for numix or info on how to pack an icon theme hasn't been published anywhere.

Bonus icons. These are not official jolla app icons but you may want to replace an icon for the related apps.

RSS: Use the lower left corner as the radius for the background and add some "textlines" visible at the top right corner. Screenshot would be a better camera icon. Weather could have a cloud- shaped background with a partial sun.

...and don't be afraid to have objects that go beyond the background boundaries. (e.g. the butterfly in the original gallery icon).

While i appreciate feedback in general i am not planning to modify them any more. Sorry.

Because it doesn't seem to be able to find a way to do this properly (ie. easy for the joe average user) here are the icons for anyone that wants to do it manually. You are on your own on this. If you want to provide a HowTo feel free to do so.

I like the maps icon very much.

vattuvarg ( 2014-03-09 21:34:03 +0300 )edit

The sharp corner of the maps icon could be the red point of a compass needle. Some lines could be faded in to symbolize degrees. Center the circle of the position marker and let the arrow of the marker reach the edge of the icon.

Your icons are beautiful. Are they free to be used?

magullo ( 2014-04-09 22:53:53 +0300 )edit

@magullo

Commercially no. Other than that i don't think they are usable outside the phone since the resolution and shape is quite specific.

Well yes. I wan't going for sheer realism BTW. I wanted a "cartoonish" look to it. After looking at it for quite a while i didn't want to change anything else.

The one on your link is waaaaaaay too minimal for my taste at least. Not against minimalism (quite fan of it TBH) but if i was going that route it would end up looking like Gary Hume's birds paintings. I made some minimal sketches but decided against it in the end.

ApB ( 2014-04-14 23:20:28 +0300 )edit

Haha @vattuvarg, that icon reminds me a lot of one of the characters in http://nedroid.com/

I can't say I dislike it, though.

Tweetian

Moth ( 2014-04-15 02:23:17 +0300 )edit

@Moth Twitter (the company) doesn't like it when people modify its logo, so you can't use it as a base for icons for another app. https://about.twitter.com/press/brand-assets Doubt that it will cause any trouble, unless @veskuh decides to use your icon in Tweetian Sailfish, but keep it in mind :)

I like it... Much more than the icon of "Orienteering Compass".
