I only use airplane mode, and I have no sim card in the phone. So when I click on Settings - Apps - Messages app icon, it says "Not available in flight mode" and then if i disable that, it lets me choose a sim card, but i have no one. i have no idea what's behind that, what kind of settings are there, or may be that are the settings, just the sim card routing?

The "Messages" app and settings deal with SMS and MMS messages only. Any other messaging is done through other apps and their settings.
As these functions are only available while a network or at least a SIM is available, trying to open it with no SIM is pointless.
hjspekka you have a valid point there.
I guess the way the settings QML and related stuff works, it needs to access everything it supports before being able to present the page correctly.
Possibly the settings page could be edited/patched to detect flight mode vs no SIM and only display independent settings.
nephros ( 2020-06-11 15:03:58 +0300 )editMinor correction: the settings for the Messages application are for SMS and MMS, but the application itself is also used for other messaging protocols (basically anything that can hook onto Telepathy), and could contain settings for those other protocols in the future.

How do you want to use messages app without a sim card / mobile network?
