It looks like Sailfish OS 3.4.0 is around the corner, as it is mentioned in the documentation, which is updated this week:

Usernames are introduced in Sailfish OS release 3.4.0.

The pictures below show the steps of unlocking an encrypted card (the 3rd step "Authorise" is no more required from Sailfish OS 3.4.0 onwards

Also the ssh user to login to the device changed:

ssh defaultuser@xxx.yyy.aaa.bbb

Sailfish OS 3.4.0 or later

ssh nemo@xxx.yyy.aaa.bbb

Sailfish OS 3.3.0 or earlier

Sure, if by "around the corner" you mean "at least another 2-3 months".

I doubt that it is around the corner because the new translation strings are not in the pool yet.

I hope it will fix my network connection issues, if not I have to downgrade my Xx to 3.2.

I wonder how multiuser will work with fingerprint unlock. If I understand currently the hardware can store maximum 5 fingerprint; what if there are 6 users and they all want to unlock their phone using their fingerprint?

This can be a P.I.T.A. ; why the renaming? Corporate reasons?

not renaming, adding multiuser support iirc. i hope default username will be prefilled with "nemo"

Let's see what it eeally brings...

Multi-user support sounds a bit highfalutin

multiusers on a phone...hmmm....well, if it's the basic linux setup, it should work out of the box. I always wanted to have a jenkins bot user on my Jolla anyways :D

tortoisedoc ( 2020-06-23 13:58:23 +0300 )edit

Naive question: are all existing apps hard-coded for "nemo"?

Writing up as an "answer", but probably would count more as "speculation/opinion"

It seems to me that Jolla is trying to differentiate Sailfish OS from Mer. Such renaming of the username would make sense as a part of the larger PR effort and dropping nemo as as a result.

Notice that

So, from the look of it, I have an impression of longer term effort to strengthen SFOS branding and having it all over the place. If it's not possible, it's better to drop it then.

Assuming that such replacement is really going to happen: Coming back to rename of the default user - replacing nemo with the defaultuser sounds like rather ... hmm, staying civil ... odd idea. They clearly didn't have any good idea for a better name and just pasted from some tmp proposal presentation. For no reason it may break some apps, assumptions, and developers workflow. Yes, we were told that we should not use nemo in the apps and, I think it is not sued in my apps (but not 100% sure), but I don't see any technical reason on why to prefer defaultuser to nemo. In many aspects, nemo is short and has been all over the docs, users HOWTOs and so on.

Just voicing my opinion.

Maybe the "real" default user will be set wenn installing Sailfish OS?

wosrediinanatour, doesn't sound so from the text regarding login. However, nothing is released yet, so maybe it will be adjusted. Your guess would be a decent way of implementing it.

i seem to recall that they said there was going to merge mer and sfof in a single os. (to the level that doesn't interfere with the closed parts at least) Hence the mer to sfos renaming (IRC logs etc etc).

As a linux user it was always weird to me that you couldn't set up your prefered name and had to use nemo (for whatever reasons historical techinical etc). Hopefully with the multi user support we will be able to do that and again i hope for systemd-homed support with which you can do various cool stuff.
