Is it possible to enhance the camera quality at 16:9 ratio and use 7 Mpix or is it limited by hardware?

Nokia N9 is able to take pictures at 7 Mpix in 16:9 ratio.. :0

I think it is a HW limitation (I'll remove answer if it's incorrect, if you want to). I think they are using a 4:3 sensor, and cropping it to 16:9 when that mode is selected. 6MP is pretty much exactly a 16:9 letterbox inside a 8MP 4:3 area if i calculated that corretly...

Here is how it was done for the N9 anyway: http://image-sensors-world.blogspot.se/2011/07/nokia-n9-flagship-camera-phone-goes.html Note specifically: "While N9 spec says 8MP, the sensor is actually 8.7MP"

And AFAIK that is not the prevalent way to do things.. since most manufacturers want to boast about pixel count. (not talking about Jolla here but rather the OEM or even camera sensor manufacturer)

N9 was using Carl Zeiss, but I don't know what camera HW is used in Jolla. IMO camera on N9 was slightly better overall than one on Jolla, but updates could also significantly improve situation too.

Carl Zeiss is the company behind the lens (they most likely did not even produce it, they just designed the lens)
