Let the app closing gesture start from the top of the side edges. And let it be not precisely vertical too.

Jolla gestures are cool, but with the current device screen size, it is quite a big problem for me (and others?) to reach the very top screen edge and move thumb in a vertical way for closing the app.

So let's make it possible to start the closing gesture already from the side edge and detect the gesture even when thumb just tries to move in a vertical way (going in a curve in fact). image description

What do you think? Would it make closing apps gesture easier for you? Or are your hands already large enough?

P.S.
That is mostly an extraction from my longer thinking on the topic

P.P.S. Sure, same rule should be applied for the left edge of the screen as well. I skipped the left handed user situation for the drawing simplicity.

This is closely related to this question about direction and this question about close gesture. I'd even say it's a duplicate of the latter and that you should add this as a suggestion to that question instead.

Somehow you're right, the top edge is quite far. But I'm afraid like this you confuse some users; two different functions - but gesture from the same edge.

I think it would be better if the device was slightly smaller

@Acce, yes there are fans of smaller devices (me included), this proposal is more of a fix for the current device behavior. Also takes natural finger movement way into account.

I like the approach this answer takes. At least in regards to making a common gesture, this makes all kinds of sense.

But, I'm phrasing this as an answer, so I've got something of an appending to the idea as posted... why isn't the pull-shade being used to close an app (making close the last item that can be pulled and selected). I would think that we'd get to what this ask is looking for, in addition to making a gesture common enough that all thumbs could reach for, no matter the side of the device the gesture starts from.

How about adding a diagonal gestures, recognized if a full swipe from (enter) side to (leave at) bottom or even from side to top or reverse. Default could be from sides ends in closing apps or lock phone.

EDIT: keep freedom-of-choice in mind and add a switch to turn it on/off

People are different certainly. To be honest I find even the current amount of gestures confusing. A month of active Jolla use and I still tend to try swiping apps off from the bottom edge.. (learned in BB10 I think). That's why I wouldn't increase number of gestures, would just make phone guess better and recognize how I am trying to move finger instead of how I actually move it.

@chemist: the diagonal close movement has already been suggested, as it is a special case of https://together.jolla.com/question/1916/suggestion-new-gesture-to-close-app/, where you start at the side and end at the bottom.

@Artem: Even the Nokia N9 had swiping from bottom to minimize apps (I tend to do this swipe from time to time as well).

@Mohjive the suggestion there breaks with the UI as you can end up being already on the then red area - how you pull that trigger?

@chemist: my view is that if you end the swipe in the red area, the close action should be activated. If you start in the red area, you could move the swipe upwards to end it outside of the area, if you only wanted to minimize the application. Like so:
