Swipe actions should always follow phone actual orientation

At the moment it is very confusing how the "close" / "to the background" and "notifications" swipes work. As in some apps that rotate to landscape also the swiping orientation rotates, in others, swiping stays in portrait orientation, despite the app beeing in landscape.

Therefore my reguest is to fix swipe orientation always to match the actual phone orientation - this is the only way to avoid unwanted swiping action results.

Edit: Not sure if this one should be called "enhancement", "feature-request" or even a bug - After a longer while, it's becoming more and more annoying to remomber which apps close from side, which ones from top when using them in landscape. Let's vote and fix this!

I agree this is very confusing. I was satisfied with the absolute behaviour before the update to 1.0.3.8. As a workaround, if you are unsure, swipe carefully with the preview. Don't release your finger if the wrong action shows up. Just swipe back again.

Please give examples of apps rotating without gestures rotating. And the only way to avoid unwanted swiping action results is to fixate it to one orientation only. People never adapted well to the rotate-gestures with orientation on the N9

@chemist In those apps which rotate (camera, browser, terminal, gallery (partially), webcat), gestures are rotated too. I read this as that gestures could be changed by orientation also within apps which doesn't support lanscape yet.

chemist - not true. I loved the gesture rotation on N9 and so do my friends and family members who still use N9. Examples: all Android apps. And in adition File Browser and Webcat Browser. However, with these last programs swipe gestures are not right only when the apps are launched in the landscape mode. If these apps are launched in portrait mode and then phone is rotated to landscape, then also swipe gestures rotate to mach actual program orientation.

As this makes living even worse as in "the phone changes virtual orientation when putting it on a table" and you never know which direction is the actual gesture, I'd love to have a setting to handle the swipe gestures [rotate|portrait|landscape].

Note: It was asked for the N9 to have it not rotate - now it is asked to rotate... weird world!

I am not asking to not implement this feature, I am asking to have freedom-of-choice as the 1.0.3.8 drives me nuts on having gestures rotate and even only on some pages.

I agree. Gesture orientation should be in sync with app orientation. If a non-rotating app displays its content diagonally, my brain adjusts to the situation. "Top" is then on the left (or right) and I tend to do a swipe down from the top of the app, not the phone edge pointing upwards.

Rotating with app rotation might be ok in general as you adapt by looking at your phone but nevertheless you are screwing over your muscle memory and that wasn't the intention of the UI, was it? As soon as you need to think about it, not looking at your phone to do something will get hard as you have several aspects to cope with. Having something fit to muscle memory is not easy but a good way to go.

I see only two acceptable options: Leave it fixed, e.g. the smaller phone edge with buttons right is always "top", or the swiping top stays in sync with the app display orientation. I would totally exclude the option to rotate the swiping top independent of app rotation capabilities. I think this was suggested here somewhere. Maybe we should list those 3 options (are there more?) here clearly for some kind of voting?

IMO always fixed to portrait works best. Before last update all gestures were fixed even you used landscape android apps or terminal in landscape. I always do the wrong gesture when using browser rotated to landscape.

Rotating gestures IMHO are confusing and annoying. They should either be fixed to the edges, regardless of the orientation, or configurable.

I agree. While Jolla is working with more apps to support landscape view, possibly releasing few more apps more to support it in some upcoming updates, users might get confused if some are closed with swipe right and some with swipe down (when the phone is used oriented landscape). So, even in those apps not yet supporting lanscape, the gestures could still be changed by the orientation. (This answer is somewhat repeating what the question already proposes, but at least it's a solution to the problem) :)

Maybe Jolla can make a setting "rotate gestures with app rotation"/"with phone rotation"/"don't rotate gestures", so you have the choice what suits best for you. I mean... its Jolla, its about personalization, isnt it?
