Telegram is a libre software client (with closed distributed servers) for Instant Messaging. It focus on privacy an encryption, it's and it will be free of charge, and uses an open protocol. It tries to look similar to Whatsapp to make easier a transition and uses mobile-numbers for contact manangement.

There are official clients for Android and IOs, and unofficial ones for GNU/Linux, MacOS, Windows, Windows Phone, and web.

Edit: 11.07.2017 (h.berd);

There are two (workaround)options now:

Depecher from Openrepos works: https://openrepos.net/content/blacksailer/depecher

Edit: 18.12.2018 (jse);

A new Telegram Client app is in the works, called Telegra Me. It is actively developed and looking very promising. You can check the source at: http://gitlab.unique-conception.org/sailfish-app/telegra-me

I would like a native Telegram app for Sailfish OS as well. I know security might not be as good as they advertise, but in my opinion it's better then giving al your personal info to Facebook, since they own WhatsApp as wel.

A Threema port would be nice also. At the moment in Germany it looks like Threema is more popular (in the press) as Telegram. And I don't trust an russian company more as an us company. Threema is lokated in the swizerland. That sounds a little bit better.

But Telegram is Opensource and well documented. On Threema you only have trust.

But were is the different? Telegram is opensource, but the servers are in russia. Russia is not known for its trustworthiness. So perhaps the source of Telegram is trustworth, but what is with the company who ownes it? It's a Facebook clone. Threema is closedsource, but its servers are in the swizerland and its a small company which i trust (for the moment).

for me, web online app from Telegram is working very well. Maybe, native app is not needed as long as Telegram have such a good service and Sailfish offers a good enough browser. By the way, Wire web app (alternative to Skype) can not be used from Sailfish browser, can anybody check that?

Depecher works well but media can not be shared currently. If you need to share media then use the Telegram PWA (progressive web app). Works very well.

Also there are still a lot of bugs that need to be fixed, plus some other basic features are missing.

It would be nice if Depecher would arrive in the Jolla Appstore.

I wonder whether there‘s any active development going on regarding Depecher. It is nice.

@coderus I saw that your cloned github project of sailorgram is under active development. It seems every verson is in alpha stage, but maybe the community can help you with some improvements like translation or feedback. Can you give us a short description about the roadmap etc. pls? thanks for your work and all the best!

Recently there are problems with the stable version from ade on warehouse for me. I can record audio messages and send them to anyone, but only android users seem too be able to play them. WP and IOS users can't hear my audio messages.

Is there a fix for this problem?

Please Devs have a look at sailorgram!!! It's a good and necessary app for SFOS.

I reopened this request, because we need a new developer(team) for the telegram/sailorgram app.

As stated in this thread https://together.jolla.com/question/160188/cant-open-sailorgram-after-update-to-iijoki/ there is no active development anymore.

Dax abandoned the project sailorgram and jollagram wasn't ever usable for me and many other users.

There are two (workaround)options now:

  • you can use sailorgram-harbour (github) from @coderus which is a beta and has connection problems for some users and no bugfixes till now
  • you can use the recompiled stable package from ade (warehouse), which is not under development

So, please Devs take care of this important project. Telegram is an important app for many sfos users and I believe it's only a matter of time till the recompiled version from ade will stop working without some changes.

Thank you!

proposal, i think you may add on the above thread a list of actual app which work .
and add a note about the sailorgram situation (maybe for the others too).
I think that the above thread miss this kind of info.
In this way people may have a short opinion about the existing solution.
Just short, then they will may come to your answer for more details i think

Seconded! Telegram is essential. I use the recompiled stable Sailorgram, and I'm just hoping it will keep working as long as possible.

bocephus ( 2017-05-12 10:12:58 +0300 )edit

Are there any news? I think it's really necessary to have a native app (community-ports don't have the possibility to use androids Telegram or Whatsapp...)

While I love Whatsapp integration in CepiPerez's Whatsup, and the way he designed the interface, I'm slowly starting to move towards something more secure, and more durable since Whatsup's development seems compromised (see the application thread on TMO).

Telegram might be an option, but I find Jollagram to be a bit incomplete in comparison to Whatsup (and it's not developping fast, is it?) and for some reason I have trouble using Sailorgram: it crashes randomly when my phone is sleeping in my pocket, and I don't get any notifications despite the option being ticked.

I stumbled upon Open Whisper Systems while browsing Stack Exchange, and it seems quite promising, as it also provides calls. That could be very interesting in my opinion. Would it be possible to develop a native Sailfish application with that, or at least tell the current developpers that there is demand (but, is there, except me?).

I think that the best way to make your proposal noticed is to not hide it as an answer in a thread about something else, but to create a thread of its own ;)

I would follow @Orologiaio's suggestion :-) SailorGram is unde development and notifications when in background are not supported yet (but the developer is working on it). So you have to give it a bit time :-)

yup, no connection issues as in jolagramm and it is currently in development, while jolagramm seems to be on hold

Yes, this one really looks good. Jollagram isn't useable and in comparison really isn't an option at all...

I am also using "Jollagram" from the warehouse. The native Sailfish app works very well and so far this is enough for me.

Why using an android app?

And PLEASE NO political discussions about liberty in countries like Russia. This is a very bad habit to talk about a country where You do not live and work. And Your knowledge is only from things You have heard and read in some newspapers and magazines. And also not fair against the people there!

I live in Germany AND Russia and will shut up with any commonts about Liberty here AND there

Back to "Jollagram/Telegram !

Just my 5 cents
