Telegram is a libre software client (with closed distributed servers) for Instant Messaging. It focus on privacy an encryption, it's and it will be free of charge, and uses an open protocol. It tries to look similar to Whatsapp to make easier a transition and uses mobile-numbers for contact manangement.

There are official clients for Android and IOs, and unofficial ones for GNU/Linux, MacOS, Windows, Windows Phone, and web.

Edit: 11.07.2017 (h.berd);

There are two (workaround)options now:

Depecher from Openrepos works: https://openrepos.net/content/blacksailer/depecher

Edit: 18.12.2018 (jse);

A new Telegram Client app is in the works, called Telegra Me. It is actively developed and looking very promising. You can check the source at: http://gitlab.unique-conception.org/sailfish-app/telegra-me

I would like a native Telegram app for Sailfish OS as well. I know security might not be as good as they advertise, but in my opinion it's better then giving al your personal info to Facebook, since they own WhatsApp as wel.

A Threema port would be nice also. At the moment in Germany it looks like Threema is more popular (in the press) as Telegram. And I don't trust an russian company more as an us company. Threema is lokated in the swizerland. That sounds a little bit better.

But Telegram is Opensource and well documented. On Threema you only have trust.

But were is the different? Telegram is opensource, but the servers are in russia. Russia is not known for its trustworthiness. So perhaps the source of Telegram is trustworth, but what is with the company who ownes it? It's a Facebook clone. Threema is closedsource, but its servers are in the swizerland and its a small company which i trust (for the moment).

I'm currently working in a Telegram port to Sailfish. Let's see if I have time to finish it :)

PD: Currently working means just started :P

Hi Xgoan, I really appreciate your effort. I'm interested in testing your app if needed.

@Xgoan, any chance you could re-use code from Mitakuuluu for the UI? Or even add Telegram support in Mitakuuluu.

Maybe in a future. ATM I haven't reached the UI part.

For those who cannot wait for a native app, you can install the Android Telegram app by following https://together.jolla.com/question/30926/howto-install-google-play/. You'll get the app through the Google Play store then without an issue.

I prefer not to use android apps and I definitely don't want to use any Google related services. But thx for the tip.

to use Android Apps is very easy.... but it will not help to bring jolla alive on the market

Are you people aware of this thread on TMO?

People already started and compiled, even got it working. Only thing needed is just a UI I think.

@Jozz the telegram app has no Google Service dependencies.

It's on f-droid, which runs perfectly on the jolla

Good idea. Do you get notifications?

Jozz ( 2014-04-12 01:39:39 +0300 )edit

No, perhaps this function will work only in a native app.

With the standard browser works well too, and perhaps a little better.

wernel ( 2014-04-15 19:02:55 +0300 )edit

Webogram is great to run on firefox browser , it also shows notifications on the desktop. But I am definitely more inclined towards a QML app !

Please, no app. Write a telepathy plugin instead. Why would we need another app for yet another messaging service?

...Because a telepathy addon is nearly useless without support for emoticons, image-/video-/position-sharing/display.

kormarun ( 2014-11-03 18:05:25 +0300 )edit

I would find a chat integration useful.

If someone like me doesn't want to use the android version of telegram and does not want to have their browser occupied by telegram you could try this:

https://openrepos.net/content/olpe/sailfish-telegram-webview

It's just a silica webview for the web interface of Telegram. At least it works for me as a temporary solutions while waiting for native app and/or plugin.

Otherwise nice, but no notifications!

There are some build instructions for the Desktop version at https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop/blob/master/QTCREATOR.md . This one atleast clearly tells that Telegram Desktop client relies heavily on Qt . There should be some way to port/adapt it for Sailfishos ?

Hello,

here is the source code of Sahke (my early state implementation of Telegram for Sailfish)

https://github.com/jsfdez/sahke

REMEMBER: It's unfinished I have no time to continue developing the application as I have other projects ATM :(

It's based on telegram-cli implementation (only works on linux) with changes to act as a library instead of a separate process.

At this point the application registering is working and you can see your active conversations and receive the message (NO LIVE CHAT)

Thanks. Can you give a brief on what is implemented / works? Not a developer, just curious. :-)

Looks like someone already started a Qt Telegram connection manager for Telepathy as part of GSOC2014. Repository is at http://quickgit.kde.org/?p=scratch%2Fakulichalexandr%2Ftelegram-testing.git

Edit: repositories have moved and are now at: Qt-based client library for Telegram IM and Telegram connection manager for Telepathy

easy to port to sailfish ?

pavi ( 2014-12-16 21:09:16 +0300 )edit

It's not a matter of porting, telepathy is the messaging framework also used in Sailfish. I haven't looked at it in detail but if the connection manager works and the Qt client library is in good shape then probably only a proper UI needs to get built.

misja ( 2014-12-19 14:35:27 +0300 )edit

There are rpms waiting for us: https://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1488410&postcount=106 It would be nice if @TemeV would explain how to use them properly.
