Running SailfishOS on N9

I'd like to flash sailfish on Nokia N9. Looking around I found various places pointing to a former webstite containing the flash utitlities provided by Nokia on skeiron.org which is not available anymore. Is there any alternative download source for flasher for debian ?

I have a black chinese n9. Do I have to flash the chinese firmware listed in "mrcrab.net" or can I flash any english version ? I will be totally screwed if the phone will come up with a chinese OS ;-)

SailfishOS can partly be run on N9 hardware. One very useful resource is this Talk Maemo Org (TMO) community wiki: http://wiki.maemo.org/Sailfish

As my relavant comments regarding the portability of SailfishOS were removed I just add them here: SailfishOS has also been (partly) ported to other non-Jolla hardware in addition to N9xx like Nexus 4 and 7.. and the future may see many other droid-related SailfishOS ports if/when the challanges in the closed nature of those hardware and device driver layer can be redolved. The OS is not the bottleneck here but the chip manufactures closed and proprietary business modes. (cc: @torpak ;)

Interesting skeiron.org aka http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/ is really not available anymore. Mrcrab.net seems to be the only choice at the moment. Well, I used the same flasher-3.5 for Maemo4,5 and 6 (harmattan) so I suppose it works with SailfishOS as well. You can flash any image, so don't care about the Chinese firmware! If you screw up your N9 totally, come by I think I can rescue it...also have some HW-spare parts :) Good luck!

Thanks everybody ! So I will flash on Debian using a virtual Win and the corresponding exe which is still available for download. I'm going to use an english firmware to flash.

All the needed tools for flashing, using different OS e.g. Windows should be available on the Wiki sites of Maemo.org. Happy flashing!

Can you update a tutorial for 2018?, seems that some files are missing and I don't know if has to be Harmattan Flasher.

I found a flasher for Linux, no matter what distro you have. SP Mediatek Flasher https://spflashtools.com/linux/sp-flash-tool-v5-1728-linux and It is available for Windows too (the flasher).

I don't use Debian distribution sorry, I am Centos user and converting debs, liking libs . . . I don't want to do that.

Even Sailfish use RPMs, don't you find that silly? haha. If you can do a new tutorial for Flashing Nokia N9 with that flasher, that would be great! I recently ordered that phone from China to try Sailfish, and I want it so hard.

The flasher tool is the only thing it prevents me from installing it, and I would like to have a tutorial before the phone arrives. I mean, I don't flash phones every day ; however, I kind of use terminal and that stuff, so maybe a little guide with all the files where we can donwload would be awesome!

Sailfish on N9 = waste of time as far as user experience is concerned. The original N9 was used more as a proof on concept by Jolla in their early days. you'd be better off buying a used Jolla1 or perhaps a used XperiaX and buying a licensed copy of SFOS for it, otherwise, sorry, I cannot help you.

Perhaps to consider reselling your real/fake N9 when you get it and going for something from this list, which may work out cheaper than buying a used Jolla1 or XperiaX;

Don't get me wrong, the original N9 is/was a fine phone, but is old hat now compared to what is available on the second hand market - all of this of course, is just my opinion and nothing else! :)

@Edz in what way is it a waste of time? The form factor of the N9 is better, it’s the perfect size imo, and build quality of the N9 surpasses those of J1 and Xperia by far imo. Personally I don’t care for the constantly growing screen sizes. I want a device that’s easy to bring, without having to use a bag or think what pocket I put it in when I sit or do any activity besides walking. I’ve already wasted a Jolla C and an Xperia X screen, by play wrestling and climbing a tree respectively with my son. Both phones were residing in my front pocket when it happened.

As I've said, user experience is limited with SFOS on N9, I said nothing about form factor and I also do like the N9, I owned a few of them, but again, I think the user experience is poor as an introduction for a new user. Each to his own and my response was not to you anyway.

I found this sitewhile searching for the flasher software as well, since skeiron.org is down. I had the very same problem! It hosts both 32 and 64-bit versions for Debian. I can't guarantee the validity of the versions posted, nor the safety of using them, but I believe them to be the exact same versions (3.12.1) that earlier were hosted by skeiron and Nokia.

What I can tell you, is that I successfully re-flashed my N9 with original firmware, an open kernel, the MOSLO kernel as well as Ubiboot using the 32 bit version I got from there. Happy flashing!

Another question occur. According to the wiki ubiboot has to be installed first. As I understand it's a bootloader where I can switch between Harmattan and Sailfish. Can I drop the installation of ubiboot ? I'd like to flash only Sailfish.

Yes. Did you check the TMO-threads, it's all there: you don't have to use Ubiboot, but it's just cool and easier cause of the multboot ;)
