What are the options currently for making video calls with the Jolla, other than Skype (reported to work)?

I know XMPP is available, but not how to use it for trying video calls or if it's even working already.
Please only name ways that you have
successfully tried or you know from a reliable source they are working.
State your OS version in answers!

It is a pity that video calls are not a native feature in sailfish! My beloved n900 has XMPP video support(but the front facing cam sux!).. and my brand new jolla has a superior camera but the software is not there!! please fix this asap! XMPP is quite important and will be even more important in the future

Get people to vote on the appropriate questions or find some other way to harass Jolla with your wishes and they might move it up the priority list. There are some top-votes items that haven't seen any attention in the 1.0 update though , so that's not the pace we can expect things to go at. patience!

@bennypr0fane: Than it is even more inexcusable: If they just need a frontend to allow such a feature, they should invest it. as I understand QT5 is superior and quite fast in developing frontends. I think an open XMPP-Client with video and voice support would be paramount. This is one thing even the Andoids are lacking (and IMHO the main reason for the rise of whatsApp & Co). But I will be patient(what else can I?)

Is Skype still working? After my Jolla was reflashed in service, I have not found a working Android Skype app anymore. First there was a connection problem: Android apps complained of being off line in wlan. Re-installed Android support over wlan to fix this. Then Aptoide Skype version installed and login succeeded, but then the app exits because of missing Amazon App Store or something similar. So where to get a working Skype?

Tried Android app Viber a few days ago when someone told me that it has video calls now and it works.

Still I hope that some day soon a native solution for video calls will be possible.

And which version of Viber are you using? In the Jolla Aptoide store, 2.0 is available, on Google Play it's 5.0.2. Both just keep crashing immediately when I start them. :-(

P.S. rest assured that some day, native video calls will be possible. When that day is going to come is another question :-)

Using Viber version 5.0.2. but I don't use Google Play, just Aptoide. Just checked now and the latest version there is 5.0.2.12.

Google Hangouts works but does not give any visual notifications when you receive a call... You need to open the app manually.

isn't Google Play necessary in order to install Google Hangouts? Or do you mean you're actually using the native client for Google Hangout video calls?

XMPP video calls are currently not working. Jolla uses telepathy for its xmpp, and there is a KDE client for Telepathy capable of making video calls. You can check it out, in here, so it might not be very hard to achieve a working frontend for Sailfish.

I'm sorry to say, no.

I think, from what the interface tells me, that I haven't got an account that supports it. Maybe someone who does can confirm it. I for one, have to trust that the KDE-Telepathy devs tested it successfully, otherwise they wouldn't show it so proeminently.

In theory all that you'd need if having telepathy-kde-call-ui installed, and a supported account, would be to press the start video button in the chat window

What are the requirements for an account to support it? Getting one shouldn't be much of a problem, should it? But more importantly, where do you install telepathy from? You know you can't just run any KDE app on Sailfish, do you?

I gave kde-telepathy has an example of a seemingly working solution. KDE is free software, so the implementation is out there for everyone to study. Of course if Jolla wanted to use KDE's implementation, which I'm not suggesting they do, they could port it. But what I suggest is, just take a look at the code and then implement your own Jolla-messages interface extension to support video-calling.

What this KDE-telepathy implementation proves (And I'm sure empathy does aswell) Is that all the necessary libs are already there. Jolla just needs to step up in implementing the necessary missing UI glue.

EDIT: This answer does not pertain to video calls at this time. It will when XMPP video calling is possible, for now it only regards chatting! :-) In the meantime, I'm leaving it as a placeholder... For what it's worth, here is a thread that deals with some explanation for setting up your XMPP for chatting. It's really not as complicated as I thought - you just can't add new subscriptions from Jolla, but u need 2 use a 2nd client. Still IMHO the XMPP feature is not ready for day-to-day business. Ability to make a video call is not confirmed!
