Peek menu for improved one hand usage

Sailfish's gesture navigation concept is great, but some gestures are very hard or even impossible to draw when using the phone with one hand, especially when the device is large. In particular, quite some people have requested here to have a one-hand solution for closing apps.

For handling the currently opened app, I suggest to introduce a new menu, combined with the peek view, i.e. when you slide into the screen horizontally and the app goes semi-transparent to reveal the home screen.

  • Peeking would also reveal icons above and/or below the current position of the thumb, say close and minimize actions (for now). (Figure left)
  • Dragging the thumb over an icon might display sort of a "tooltip" explaining the icon, also confirming the "hover" state. (Figure right)
  • Releasing the thumb in this state would invoke the respective action.
  • Dragging the thumb out again would hide peek view and menu again.

In future, this menu could offer further app-related features like pinning the cover of the current app or offer a unqiue access point to app specific settings.

Sorry for the crappy illustration, I hope it is enough to visualize the idea, though :)

Sounds like a good idea, a bit difficult to know how well it will work until it has been implemented though.

Should make this very carefully. There is already a big chance one make unknown strokes in eg. games. I often minimize apps by accident or even close it sometimes. If there are even more options going with a stroke (this time an L stroke) then the bigger question is what happened if it happened accidentally. This is an unfortunate behaviour in a stroke controlled OS.

An other idea to implement a peek-menu is presented here: https://together.jolla.com/question/9847/peeking-action-improvement/
