Currently I use Firefox for Android as main browser on Jolla, because of Sync, but more importantly, because of the privacy-options and add-on. I've Ghostery installed which blocks most of the trackers. That's an important step for privacy, and speeds up page rendering and lowers data usage as bonus. However, it would be nice to have a side-wide filter and/or firewall for this purpose, so it'll work in any browser and can block trackers hidden in apps as well.

Technically, I reckon it could be something like Privoxy, Netfilter/IPTables or hosts-based filtering. Any pointers or suggestions?

Apparently Ghostry is a tracker itself, dependant on the settings. Not really trustworthy... UBlock origin might be an alernative for firefox.

I like your idea though!

@jollcob: I know, and indeed the option not to share information is getting less and less visibility. It is however still possible. There are alternatives, but since I've already set it up, there's little reason for me to change.

The host file based approach is far less flexible than a proxy based one, not to mention the browser plugins which could even hide parts of the web pages. I would not close with released it until have least a proxy based one. Many pages started to host the advertisements on the same domain where the main content is...

The original request also mentioned hosts-based filtering, but you're right that this isn't the ideal solution for web pages. I'll reopen it.
