This question should try to give a proper overview of Jolla usage as mobile phone.

This is a community wiki question so no karma is awarded. Please make answers also community wiki.

Vote up the question if you use Jolla as your primary phone (either only phone or mostly used phone).

If you don't use Jolla as your primary phone, give an answer with the reason why. If an answer corresponding your reason is already posted, just vote up that answer. If you don't want to state the reason for not using Jolla as your primary phone, vote up the answer "Not using as primary phone - no reason stated".

Expected data: ratio Jolla primary vs. not primary, reasons for non-primary and importance of reasons (measured by % of votes for individall reasons vs. all votes).

I thought that this could be of interest to Jolla and the community. If not, please feel free to comment for closing the question. Either way the question shall be closed after 7-10 days (as it should help make an overview of current situation) or after approximately 100 votes if this happens first.

P.S. For the first 10 days I (@Neo) used to go back and forth from N9 to Jolla. After that Jolla has become my primary phone.

EDIT 13.2.2014.:

The question has been closed after 23 hours due to significant number of votes (as it was intented to give an overview of current situation). Thanks to everyone for contributing.

Voting results:

  • 180 votes in total (6,94% of all users at Together)
  • 163 (91% of total) using Jolla as primary phone
  • 17 (9% of total) not using Jolla as primary phone

Reasons for not using Jolla as primary phone:

  • Missing CalDav support (29% - 5 out of 17)
  • Offline navigation support (24% - 4 out of 17)
  • Bugs in People app handling of Contacts data – incorrect labels (24% - 4 out of 17)
  • No reason stated (18% - 3 out of 17)
  • Lack of (native) applications (18% - 3 out of 17)
  • MMS support (12% - 2 out of 17)
  • Less rich functionality in basic apps than other phone (12% - 2 out of 17)
  • Landscape orientation does not work everywhere (12% - 2 out of 17)
  • Physical keyboard (12% - 2 out of 17)
  • SIM bug or other network related problems (6% - 1 out of 17)
  • Lack of Dual SIM capability (6% - 1 out of 17)
  • No Gpodder and no Pebble support (6% - 1 out of 17)

@Neo: If you want a poll, you must give all options the same level. You cannot have one option in the question and the others in the answers. Also, according to your options I would have to answer "not the primary phone" -- because this implies that I have additional phones in use.

@jgr Thanks for taking part. I tend to disagree with you: primary phone means to me either only phone or most used phone (if you use more than one) and this is what really matters I think. I don't think the level means much here: it was just an easier way for those who use the phone as primary to vote the question. I think these changes will distort the primary idea (concept). I think you should comment before making such huge changes, although it is a community wiki.

@Neo: If you disagree: Just remove answers and edit the question accordingly.

jgr ( 2014-02-13 01:06:12 +0300 )edit

@Neo: Was it by purpose, that you returned the question into its state before my edits? (May have been the browser update problem.)

jgr ( 2014-02-13 01:19:44 +0300 )edit

@jgr Did that. It is a yes or no question. If no one can state the reason or not.

No, not yet, because of missing CalDav-support and because of bugs in People app handling of Contacts data (incorrect labels), and also because of missing proper offline navigation support in Maps.

So, People, Calendars and Maps are the most critical apps in terms of feature-completeness in my mobile device use-cases.

Currently, I use Jolla as a companion to my N9, and they make up quite a ice pair ;)

the things that bother me mostly:

  • the native calender is bewildering, confusing and bad to use, no reminder function
  • synchronisation with google calendar and google contacts not completely
  • incorrect labels in contacts data (all labels are "privat")
  • no (offline) navigation with voice control
  • no program like nokia pc suite

(unfortunately) i will use my old nokia 5800xm, until this problems are fixed.

but nonetheless: i love my jolla, the great idea and the incredibly good community!!!

Still on N9 as primary one. Can’t say that’s due to some critical apps I have on N9 and miss on Jolla. Basic set of apps on Jolla so far is enough for me (of course, more is better) but apps, which exists and I use more or less often, have less rich functionality compare to N9 (e.g. Maps, Contacts/People, landscape not at any place I expect it). Nonetheless, plan to shift one day, just need more time.

Not using as primary phone because the lack of physical keyboard and landscape orientation does not work everywhere. I'm also forced to use mostly Android software as there is not native applications for my needs and my Droid 4 does the Android multitasking better than Jolla.

Just being curious... What sailfish packages would you need to replace those android apps?

vattuvarg ( 2014-02-13 17:27:33 +0300 )edit
  • KeePass2 or any Keepass2 password vault compatible password manager.
  • Better browser (there is still lot of problems with the native browser)
  • Better email client
  • Facebook application (Browser feels regression after facebook app)
  • Linkedin client (Same thing as with the facebook app)
  • Kindle application
  • Andropas (local transportation guide app)
  • Spotify
  • Google todo (simple way to manage google calendar tasks)
  • Dropbox (Sailbox does not have all the features I'm using)

Not using it yet as primary phone for 2 main reasons that I hope will be circumvented soon : - No Gpodder and I use it a lot on N9 - No pebble support Both are being worked on so should be coming soon :p Twitter lack of integration was a problem until Tweetian came which has greatly improved the situation. I was as well a bit suspicious with the beta flag of the OS at first but seems to be ok from the limited usage I have for the moment. But still some people seems to have some trouble (lots of reboots for instance) and as I am living far from Finland, I do not want to send my Jolla for repair ! My wild guess is that most troubles will be solved by SW updates... May be I'll use it at the next OS upgrade ;-)

Just got the phone, main phone at the moment is N9, I can see the merging of both phones into the perfect phone. Several reasons I am not using it as main at the moment, e.g. storage, still need to get a memory card, vs N9 64GB, I do not know how to sync my local N9 calendar with Jolla and without uploading all my appointments to an online service. Applications, e.g. wallet still not available on jolla, I need to find a way to port data to another app? StarDict not available yet, maps and navigation. Apps integration with notification area, e.g. weather, social media, feeds. Also no support of 802.11n mixed mode.
