I have a new bug since 1.0.3.8: the phone is alive (responsive via ssh) but the display stays black when i wake up the phone (although the background light is turned on, but no way to interact with the phone). Checking the log files does not show much information, the only event that could be related is:

Feb 14 11:55:40 localhost lipstick[954]: [W] QFeedbackFFMemless::uploadEffect:361 - bool QFeedbackFFMemless::uploadEffect(ff_effect*) Unable to upload effect
Feb 14 11:55:45 localhost lipstick[954]: [D] DeviceLock::runPlugin:188 - ""
Feb 14 11:55:45 localhost lipstick[954]: [W] DeviceLock::runPlugin:189 - ""
Feb 14 11:55:47 localhost lipstick[954]: sleepDisplay

After a minute or two it works again. No idea why. Anyone else with this problem?

Hi have the same problem as you describe, there is just a "gray layer" above the screen. To get you display screen back you just have to swipe from top down like you would close a application. instead of release the finger and put the phone back into standby swipe back to the top (like you start to close an application and changed your decision). Than you will get the normal screen back without waiting. After that I always see the pulley menu. That is why I think it is just a layer/menu or something else which will not shown correctly or a transparency issue.

I know it is not a real answer to fix the problem but it is a workaround without waiting until it is working as expected.

Yes, I get this from time to time as well, exactly as described above.
