Notification area updates, email

Is it possible to configure what is updated in the notification area, and how often, or over which network (wan/mobile)? I've also noticed that updating manually (over the pulley update menu) the email is not updated.
maybe my question is not clear? what I want, when I run manually UPDATE on notifications area, is to check for example my twitter/fb accounts as well as my email accounts? At the moment emails are checked periodically only, unless I do it manually from the email application.
