As a Jolla user, I would like to share the internet connectivity of the phone with other devices over WiFi.

You can tether by USB or WIFI via command line already:

Via cmd looks easy for you, experts of Linux, but for people that is starting (I put myself in that group) it's a bit complicated :S An app would be better

I also reckon that when there's an app, it has been approved by Jolla, so it is safer. And @petaqui has a point too.

FYI: there is now four answers to this question all saying the same that an 3rd-party app already fixes this and this question is ob the 'roadmap' of Jolla, so could we accept any of the answers and close this question? (cc: @eric)

additional feature request: if possible, not just WEP security (as in the N9), but WPA2, please? :-)

(additional additional feature request: possibility to choose "hidden wireless network" - but I understand if that's a bit harder to achieve)

phle ( 2013-12-25 16:09:05 +0300 )edit

Cool to know, but.. if it can be enabled by command line, should it be solved by 3rd party app while sailors focus on something more important?

actually WEP is useless. Its without benefit of crypto, but with the discomfort (entering passphrase).

Also mentioned in the "[Official announcement] The next update release is in early March":
we'll get WLAN tethering with the post-Mobile World Congress update (that is, beginning of March 2014).

I find wlan tethering quite inconvenient compared to bluetooth tethering. Does this update bring BT-tethering too? Jolla is certainly capable of doing so, as the tether app from the store supports it.

Until it is officially available, I did write a simple app for doing this, but have not yet had time to substantially test etc. and submit it to Harbour. I have the code available in Github ( https://github.com/sremes/harbour-hotspot ), and there are RPM packages available too, but you still probably have to install it through developer mode terminal (pkcon install-local [rpm-file]). Sorry for shameless self-promotion.

Is it possible to add the wifi channel selection? :)

nsuffys ( 2013-12-26 19:05:39 +0300 )edit

You can install it also through file browser, no need to use terminal.

slehtonen85 ( 2013-12-26 20:50:34 +0300 )edit

Thanks for your work! I get "Fatal error: /home/nemo/Downloads/harbour-hotspot-0.1-3.armv7hl.rpm is not valid rpm-File" with 0.1-3. Any idea? I've not tried earlier versions.

[Edit] Nevermind, I had a problem downloading the file.

I just released an app, which supports Wifi and Bluetooth tethering and handles all necessary connections automatically: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=92206.

phle: The Wifi network, which Connman creates, is an infrastructure WPA2 network.

nsuffys: The Wifi channel selection isn't easily available due to the Connman dbus interface limitations.

@Jare - Neat! :-D

Being of the "I should most probably not tinker with the terminal"-variety, I think I'll wait until it's included in a SailfishOS update (or at least until it's available as a Jolla Store app), though - but I appreciate that it's do-able, and available. :-)

Also, I second talk.maemo.org user "Boxeri"'s question/request/wish:
If possible - show the number of currently active connections. :-)

Great work! Thanks!

@Jare - Found the Tethering app in the Jolla Store yesterday.
Yes, I still want tethering built-in in the OS, but until then this is very neat. Tried it yesterday, and it works fine.
Thank you! :-)

Having used this application extensively I can say it has shown to function perfectly during hours of testing. More stable than Joikuspot on Symbian and the battery life is much less affected. Thank you for this essential.

A related feature request is this question about bluetooth tethering.

Can that be answered by making tethering the same as "adding support of OpenGarden's mesh-type shared connectivity services"?

See more about Open Garden here
