I have a nice large sd-card in my jolla, and I would very much like to store music and videos on it. I know how to put the files there, but how does the media player find them?

I am reopening this question because, for no apparent reason, mediaplayer now no longer lists my mp3 files, although they have not moved: they still are on the sdcard. How can one get mediaplayer to rescan the system if necessary? (Note I am not comfortable with the idea of deleting all "null-files", see below)

I think you can put the files anywhere you like and the content tracker will find them. I just took an sd card from my Android phone, inserted it in my Jolla, and after a while all the music was available in the media player.

If the media player doesn't find your music automatically, try deleting all the (null).* files in your home folder. For some reason these appear out of nowhere and clog up the content tracker (or whatever is going on). I have absolutely no idea why this works, but it has always worked for me so far.

I cannot really imagine that it is wise to delete those files. For some, like .bash_history for example, maybe they are not crucial for the system, but for others I am not so sure. There surely must be a less shotgun-like approach to get the content tracker to work.

I think it is a problem with mounting the sdcard. The script is called two times. The sdcard is mounted too late, because the mount at the first (early) call fails. See: https://together.jolla.com/question/31219/bug-mount-sdsh-is-executed-too-early-at-startup/

...still, to delete a whole lot of stuff, just in order to make the system do one very specific thing is not a "solution" in my eyes. Does not someone know what makes the content tracker track the content it is expected to track?

my home dir contained 7 .* files, five of them "normal" in every linux system I know (like .bash_history), the remaining two were .jolla-startupwizard-done and .jolla-startupwizard-usersession-done. Deleting those last two almost forced me to reconfigure anything after reboot ... what it did not do was to scan the content of the system. You are not claiming that deleting the bash_history affects the content tracker?

Sorry for even have asked that question. It really was that simple. I have put both music files and videos on the card, and the mediaplayer finds them just fine.

Well, I reopened it because, for me, it is rather erratic whether the files are visible or not, and once they disappeared I had to delete part of my configuration in a shotgun approach to make them reappear. This is not how I would like my telephone to work, and I hope others also would like this to be more clear.
